Still can't be in step-down, feeling depressed

Nurses New Nurse

Hi everyone,

I just want to hear what do you guys think about this. I have been working on my unit for a bit over a year (a year and 1 month to be exact). I'm in a cardiac-nuero surgical floor and we have a step down unit. I started with another 3 new nurses, who are now all in step down. And even the one who started half a year later than me are working in there. I'm the only one left who is not trained to go there. The worst thing is that everyone was asking why I haven't came over to stepdown

I asked my nurse educator why I still can't be trained there. She gave me some very general critique, such as you need to improve your time management and prioritizing skills. When I asked in what instant, and provide me an example where she feels like I'm lack of time management and prioritizing skill so that I can improve myself, she said I asked her so sudden that she didn't prepare for it. She ensured me that I'm a good nurse and we can talk about it later. Then she never brought up the issue again, nor suggest a meeting.

I did a lot of self-reflection on why I still can't go into stepdown, but I don't know where I did wrong here. I haven't heard of complains from other nurses that I'm leaving work to other nurse, missing orders nor making mistakes, and my patients said that I'm good at what I'm doing. I've tried to do everything right and be careful with the detail. I just don't know how I can improve and be good enough to be in stepdown. I feel like no matter what I do, they won't choose me to go in. I feel like a failure in the unit and people are looking down on me.

Today I talked to another nurse, she started to work more than half a year later than me, but she is "invited" to stepdown. I feel so depressed. Why I can't go in and I'm working on the unit for a little more than a year? Please guys, please help me to understand and figure out what's wrong with me? or any suggestion?

I sincerely appreciate your insight.

Since we are not present in your professional work, I can not say why you are not in Stepdown; I would ask for a meeting with the educator again to outline what aspects they found concerning, come up with your own improvement plan (including self-study or volunteer for additional classes if possible), and continue to hone your practice-it may seem hard, but please don't compare yourself to other nurses.

Focus on improvement, and you will get there. (((HUGS)))

Have you considered changing facilities and applying to stepdown somewhere else if that is what you really want?

The one you are at isn't moving you and isn't giving you feedback on what you can do to get moved. They may have good reasons not to move you and they may not, but they clearly aren't telling you either way. You may have better luck in a different facility.
