Positive Reinforcement during Orientation?

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Im just wondering, not that I expect it, when someone is hired as a new nurse going through orientation is it usual or unusual to get a little positive reinforcement? Do they really expect you to be a fast as the others that have been there for years?? Just wondering.

This has been my worse day yet but it wasnt horrible. I think Im doing fine but no one says anything...what gives ??? I guess if I make a mistake they will say something but it wont be positive. Again...what gives?? They arent the friendliest bunch and most quit after orientation hmmmmm

If i ever precept I will make it a point to give positive feedback.

I received very little and often had to ask if I was doing things right. Its discouraging to not know either way.

Not only is it discouraging but it does nothing for your confidence either. I received some criticism regarding giving a procedure I'd never seen done before. I asked the preceptor to show me and got nothing. Then same preceptor told the new nurse educator I was not going to make it as a nurse. ( yah, I looked it up in policy and Smith and Duells and asked preceptor to be there )I was a LPN for almost 5 years there and my other preceptors were saying I was ready to be on my own. But, new nurse educator does not ask my other preceptors, nope. My other preceptors are writing me letters of reference and 2 have called our manager but still I have not heard back and am left to wonder if I have a job or not? I have never been made to feel as stupid as I have been made to feel these past 2 weeks with my new day shift preceptors. Sorry about the rant. I've just never had anyone say such means things about my job performance before. Not that I am perfect or anything, I have alot to learn. Only been orienting 2 days a week and during that time took a 2 week vacation so altogether about equal to as if I'd been orienting 4-5 weeks. I was already taking a full load of pts. my husband says it is time to move on since new educator and new manager are not listening to me or calling me back.
