Nursing Residencies?

In another thread, someone mentioned nursing residencies. are these common? anyone here dne one?

I kind of did one, but other than meeting for a class one day a month, and having some meetings at the beginning of my orientation with other GNs, I don't understand what made it a "residency". IMHO it's just a word some hospitals use to dress up their orientation. Find out what specifically the nursing resisdency at your hospital involves, and you'll have a better idea of what it is.

I was a nurse "intern". It had meetings once a week at first for a month or two and then monthly with the other nurse interns. It was nice meeting them and having someone to talk to who could relate to the new grad woes. Also we had classes on various medical topics.

I went thru a 10 week critical care nursing residency. It had classroom/clinicals and then a 2-3 month unit orientation after the residency. It is a great way to start a new nursing career, especially if you can find an exceptional one.

I haven't done one, but wished I would have. Florida Hospital has them. They are suppose to give GN's the time to build more confidence in their critical thinking, time management & clinical skills, etc.. by giving you an extended orientation time. It does include some regularly scheduled class time and you are paired up with a nurse. Some critical care residencies are up to a year. I guess it just depends on what you want and what you're comfortable with. Maybe you can ask to talk to someone who has completed the program, to see if it's what you're looking for.
