New Grad (12/2014) in Houston

Hey guys, so it's been a dream to move to Houston after nursing school. I recently passed my NCLEX in Tennessee and i finally made the move. I love my chosen career but at this point i'm having a problem finding a new grad position in any of the major hospitals. I've continuously applied to Houston Methodist and i keep getting rejected. I recently went to St.Luke's career fair and nothing from that either. I know Houston is a booming city but i would like some direction from any new grad's out there who are getting access to these jobs. I would really appreciate it. Thanks guys

All of the major systems & flagship facilities in the Texas Medical Center (TMC) are BSN-only. Most only hire new grads twice a year via their formal new grad transition programs. Honestly, those TMC slots are filled months in advance with graduates who did their rotations in the facility. There are far more new grads than hospital jobs in the Houston area.

I would encourage you to focus on the outlying facilities. I know of an ADN grad that was just hired by Memorial-Hermann Katy- right after passing her NLCEX. So it would seem that there are better possibilities in the suburbs. Make sure that you include independent facilities (not affiliated with TMC systems) and LTACs also.

Best of luck to you!

Thank you HouTX, even though i graduated with a BSN it's still hard to manipulate these jobs in the Houston area. I'll go ahead and look outside the city and hopefully something comes up. Thank you

I'm from TN as well...looking to relocate to Houston. How has the transition been for you?

it hasn't been easy but it's looking up. it took me 6 months to get the job i really want but it was worth the wait (MD ANDERSON). i love living here now, taxes are great on everything and cost of living is very affordable. Make the move, you won't regret it.
