If you fail NCLEX, will you lose your job?

Nurses New Nurse

This is hypothetical, but for alot of my classmates it isn't: I know if I don't pass nclex, I go from GN to tech. That's fine, but do they usually hold my job until I retake nclex, or can I expect to not have an RN job (or the same one) if someone else comes in with a license before I get mine? Will they give preference to the person they've already put through orientation (but failed exam) or to the person who applies for the job already an RN?

I think most places hold it, at least around here. Good to check the policy at your job though.

My facility allows for two attempts at Nclex or 6 months, whichever comes first. I would check with your nurse manager or HR. We do not "work" as a nurse under the GN status, rather we work as a tech at the nurse wage until we pass.

At our local hospitals, the policy is to fill the positions as soon as possible, so a position is not held but another one is likely to be available when you pass.
