NY - Paramedic to RN?

Hey everyone.

Just joined here to inquire about the excelsior or program.

I work as a paramedic for the FDNY and am hoping to be in a fire academy this coming January. As such it is near impossible for me to attend a physical school any time soon and I really wanted to get the ball rolling on moving to RN as soon as possible.

My ultimate goal is to achieve a BSN that I can move onto NP with but for now I was curious as what exactly I can do instead of sitting around waiting.

I can't find anything specically mentioning paramedic anywhere except for this page

Can anyone give me some information on what the process for this would be like for me? I see this whole CPNE thing and I don't have any idea what this stuff is.

Is doing this online a mistake?

I have no problem with independent study and putting forth whatever effort is needed but I am just lost in how to go about this.

Good info on it. I have also been looking into excelsior. If I'm not mistaken it is actually in NY. But you still need to check your states board of nursing to make sure you can sit for the NCLEX there. So far this is the only program that I can find that is completely online without clinicals. With the exception of the CPNE which is a 3 day clinical exam, that is very intense from what I've read here. It's also the only part of this program that make me nervous, since you can only fail 3 times before you are booted out of the program all together. However, with the right preparation it can definitely be passed the first time.

I'm sure someone who has been through the program will chime in. Sorry I could help more.

I just enrolled with excelsior, and it is accepted by the new York state board of nursing. I think it is a good idea but apply first and see how many classes you would have to take to complete the program

Welcome, NYMedic! There is a member on allnurses by the name of Ronin185 who was an FDNY medic (Harlem-ish area, I believe) who now works in NYC as an ED RN after doing the P-to-RN program through Excelsior. :) I will direct him over this way, if he has time! LOL. So yes, it can be done! NY recognizes the EC degree, as the college is headquartered in Albany. Just an FYI about some states that don't license EC grads, or that require additional steps or clinical hours: State Board Requirements - excelsior.edu

I recommend applying to EC to see how many classes you'd need. You can download all kinds of good info here: Excelsior College | Program Details. I also recommend downloading the School of Nursing Catalog and reading the section about the ADN program.

The CPNE is the Clinical Performance in Nursing Exam, which is a rigorous 2.5-day exam consisting of four lab stations (not so tough for medics like us, as we are so used to lab stations) and a minimum of three Patient Care Scenarios (PCSs) during which masters-prepared nurses evaluate our ability to formulate care plans, carry out assigned areas of care, and evaluate and document everything in 2.5 hours using live patients (who have agreed to have student nurses). We are assigned two adults and one pediatric patient (though some hospitals with a low peds census may substitute an adult patient for the peds patient). During the CPNE weekend you can repeat each lab station once and also one adult and one pediatric PCS. It's basic nursing and basic assessments in a somewhat nerve-wracking framework. It's the last hurdle we jump before graduating. Students have three chances to be successful, after which they are dismissed from the program.

I completed the program in 2008, entering by virtue of being an NREMT-P. It has opened amazing doors for me! I completed my BSN in 2008 at another school, and I am now halfway through EC's MSN (education track). Don't hesitate to poke around and ask questions. :)

im from brooklyn and i attend beckley nursing prep its a bridge program for lpn paramedics and respiratory therapist to rn asn... they basically bring the online excelsior program into a classroom settin you complete classes every month we just finished anp 1 and we start anp 2 next week you should contact them maybe this program will work for you their website in Beckley Nursing Prep, LLC good luck to you !!!

Can a RN associate degree nurse enroll in a college for Nurse Practitioner right away or must you go up the ladder first?

There are ADN to MSN/NP programs out there, but they may have differing requirements for RN clinical experience prior to entry.
