Nursing Students Excelsior

Does anyone who took the excelsior tests regret not doing the classes. Obviously as the title says, money aside. Does anyone miss not having classmates and doing the 8 week classes.

I personally haven't decided on which method I want to pursue. I am finishing my last two prerequisites, A&P2 and Microbiology, right now and only have less then 3 weeks left.

If I decide i want to do the classes I only have days to register as they wont let me register for my nursing classes until my mandatory prerequisites are completed. There is only one week from the end of this semester until the beginning of the next term.

Knowing what I know about the exams, and even though courses weren't available when I was an ADN student, I would opt for the exams every time. I like doing things at my own pace, and I would rather not drag out the courses for two months each. I did all of the nursing exams in 5 months. All A's and one B.

With that being said, I have done courses for both BSN and MSN and I really enjoyed the interaction with other students.

When did the courses become available? I thought that was always part of the program.

Didn't know that it used to be exam only.

Geez, I am not sure... Maybe 3 years ago? I graduated in 2008, so I am not sure of the exact-ish year.

I loved the exam option! But it does require discipline and self teaching. Try both for the first couple classes, then you will see what works best for your schedule and learning needs! That's what is great about Excelsior...the flexibility!

I believe you are correct, it was around 2013 when that became an option.

Having done both, I appreciate both methods. I would say if you can afford it, take the courses for the classes that are hardest for you to understand the material and test out of the others.

I don't think it's that much like a traditional online class; maybe it will be different as I move forward in more nursing courses for my BSN, but it's not like I keep in touch with any of my professors via email (since we don't really have email, just the myExcelsior) or any other students after classes are over. I see familiar names, sure, but unless they're on the facebook groups I don't regularly talk to any classmates outside of discussion board posts. With that being said, I do think it is cool during discussion boards to see how different areas of nursing handle different things.

I did the exam option and didn't regret it one bit. It's tough to stay focused in a course if you know the material very well or if the material being taught is at a simpler level than what you already know. I enjoy learning new material and tend to lose focus if I have to hear the same stuff over again. The exams allowed me to skim over stuff I already know and focus on things I didn't. Some students say they like the courses better because of the explanations but I personally think you can get the same experience through exams via the internet search tools currently available.

In regards to the student relationships I think you are expecting more than you will receive. I have yet to take an online course thus far that fostered friendships as most communication with other students tends to be very matter of fact.

For the best results I would try the exam route first and see if it's a good fit as Excelsior will refund your money if you later opt for the courses and take a min number of credits.

I thought I would do exams and whiz through! But Boy with working 60-72hrs a week a one hours commute , twin 7yr olds, a mortgage, bills , one income and LIFE I think classes maybe the best option for me to focus and be discplined! I really wish I could take all classes in 5 months wow and cheaper!!! :( oh well lol!!

Just keep your eye on the light at the end of the tunnel. It will allow you to provide better for your kids and have more autonomy at your job!

You'll look back on this 5 years from now and think, wow that went fast!
