I am doing some research on different areas to move to. Upstate New York and Savannah! Georgia. What's the current deal on getting a license in Georgia for an Excelsior graduate. Any info is appreciated from anyone who has any.Thanks !

go to the GA board of nursing website-there are two rules but both saying mostly the same thing. Here is the blurb

Official transcripts showing proof of graduation from a licensed practical nursing (with clinical training in pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, medical/surgical, and mental illness), paramedic or military medical corpsmen program.

this is for either licensure by exam or by endorsement from another state. However if you endorse, then you are also required to do

  • One of the following:
    • Verification of employment documenting three (3) months or five hundred (500) hours of licensed practice
    • Proof of graduation from an approved nursing education program within four (4) years immediately preceding the date of application
    • Completion of a Georgia Board of Nursing approved reentry program

    [*]Verification of employment as a registered nurse documenting licensed practice at a healthcare facility (as defined in O.C.G.A. 43-26-7) for a minimum of eighteen hundred (1800) hours or one (1) year (as defined by the Board) in the three (3) years immediately preceding the date of application

when I did it I did endorsement even though I was living in GA at the time-they didn't have additional requirements back then.

Goodness they sure make it difficult don't they? Has anyone done this or nobody anyone who did?

You can still contact Excelsior's state boards people about this, even though you've graduated. I was thinking about getting my GA license as well, in case I have the urge to moonlight while I'm stationed here. (Savannah is great!!! :))

Thanks Luna I will do that first thing tomorrow morning. I really like it there, but I know its gonna be hoops for that license. But I have to at least try.

You can still contact Excelsior's state boards people about this, even though you've graduated. I was thinking about getting my GA license as well, in case I have the urge to moonlight while I'm stationed here. (Savannah is great!!! :))

I had hoped to move down to Atlanta but found out that if you graduate from Excelsior Online RN program then you are required to have at least one years experience in a facility or go down and obtain a preceptor situation for a number of hours.

The present secretary of state is the one responsible for this change and he is up for reelection in 2014. If he does not get reelected then the requirements will be softened. I dont know if they will be rescinded but with the coming RN shortage there is hope !

Excelsior is not doing anything about it for now because of the present political climate in Georgia. But in Maryland Excelsior has successfully organized EC graduates to push back on restrictions and the legislature has decided

to allow EC grads to obtain an RN license in that state.

When you think about it the requirements are not realistic since it is difficult for new RN grads to obtain a position in a facility in the recent past. Also online is becoming more prevalent for degrees ! EC grads have a very good reputation as per recruiters response at an Advance Nurses Jobs Fair recently.

It would be great if nurses could organize a grass roots movement in Georgia ! It seems like the SOS is more of a businessman who is about appearances rather than promoting nursing.

I am interested in a grass roots movement. I live here in the state of Georgia and will soon be a EC RN. I hate to think I will have to do a large amount of preceptorship hours or travel over an hour away to SC to complete my out of state # of hrs to meet Ga's endorsement requirements. I was aware this would be a possibility when signing up with EC, but being a full time employee, parent and spouse it wasn't feasible for me to attend a brick and mortar school.

Have you now graduated? If so were you allowed to do preceptorship in Ga?

I graduated in 2010. I currently work in a Level 1 trauma center in philadelphia so with documentation I shouldn't need a preceptorship
