Anyone doing private pay, private duty nursing?

I am looking into doing this type of work. I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give.

How do you go about it legally? Do you have pt's sign a waiver of some sort? I have that insures me to work as an independent contractor, but I'm not sure how it would cover me when working directly for a pt.

How should I bill? Do I need to have a business lic. in order to get started?

I suppose I do as I will need to be responsible for my own tax withholding and work comp.?

Is there anyone else out there that is doing private duty work??

I am sick of working for the system and want to work for my patients directly.

You shouls check with your State Board of Nursing when performing Nursing Services. You may want to get an order from the pt.'s Dr.

I plan on offering a pt. advocacy service that uses my diverse background in nursing. I want to help patients through the health care system in the way that I would for a friend or family member.

I wouldn't be actually taking on pt "nursing" care while pt was in hospital, etc. Only acting as an interpreter and advocate. I believe this would be less risky from a legal standpoint while starting out.

Any ideas on how to go about developing a contract with future patients? I plan on working on an hourly basis. What information should I include to protect myself both legaly and financially?

Still, as a Nurse, you are governed under the Board of Nursing so you would want to be prepared (and also for marketing yourself to your clientele) to share what your qualifications are that are specific to providing the advocacy service. I have heard of this service, also is provided and court ordered through the court system, by Social Workers.

I think it would be a fantastic service, difficult to get payment for, as people usually think "they could or should" be able to do this themselves. One thought I do have is a minimum of hours per project projected up front. I myself would not want to work a couple of hours on a project here and there; to me, it takes up time that is better spent (as I do) subcontracting 12 hours minimum at a facility and getting more total revenue for my business.

You do have a good idea.... I have seen this type of business on the Internet. Try doing a Google Search and see what is out there already. Why reinvent the wheel when you can just "tweek" what someone else is doing.
