Hi guys,

Just posted a thread in Camp nursing, but it was hard for me to even find the post, so I'll post here....

any ER nurses ever worked/or will work as a summer camp nurse, in addition to your FT ER job? How was your schedule? Did you just work on call? Benefits? Your kids also go with you?

Would love the info/insight you have gained or have learned of this process.

Thanks!

I've often thought about this, but I'm not sure how you would go about telling management that you plan on taking off anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks to work at another job, especially during the summer months when the majority of nurses are planning on taking vacation. I know at my job you have to schedule vacation days almost 5 months ahead of time during the summer months.

thanks for your reply. My idea is to work "as needed" or give them one 24 hour period per week. I'm thinking every Tuesday, if my scheduling person would let me do that... we don't have a set schedule.

I'm with you, it would be impossible to get summer time weeks off. No way! I don't know what kind of nurse, other than school or a Per Diem nurse, who could swing a full time summer camp job...

I also don't want to commit more than one day a week to another job with summer coming up. I already work too much!

I think working as a summer camp nurse would be awesome, though. What kind of camp are you thinking about?

For school nurses, nurse subs are needed in case the nurse takes time

off. At one point I was a sub for 3 different systems to get steady

work.

For camps, I am not sure how they handle this issue as often there is

only one nurse. Check with the camps in your area.

It also depends on if the camp is a day camp or a camp where

the students live there full time during their stay.

You could also ask these questions of a peer-there is a camp

nurse association.

there are many camps around where I live.... they're pricey ones - I might only be able to work Per-Diem, but the camp is a typical overnight, all summer, all activities, co-ed camp environment.
