Midnight Nurse VS Dayshift Nurse

Specialties Emergency

Published

I'm a dayshift nurse now, for 3 yrs. I worked midnights for 8 yrs. Since I've been on dayshift I have noticed a different type of attitude on midnights towards dayshift. Also things have been said that are derogatory towards dayshift. I don't ever remember acting that way. When midnights come on, they don't hardly want to give you their complete attention, If busy they act like its dayshifts fault that its crazy, and it always seems to get busy around 500P I've even heard they have said that they are better nurses than dayshift. My concern is ,that we all need to work together as a team, and take care of the patients, Lets stop this bickering between shifts. Is it like this elswhere?

Okay, this will probably get me smacked.........but I might like that so here it goes.

Nightshift is wonderful, gives me more freedom to be me. No suits, no busybodies, and less staff. I could probably use more supervision (I heard some of you) but I have to have fun while I work, and my coworkers are usually my toys.....(put away the perverted thoughts)

I do notice with a few dayshifters that they are needier, but a few comments usually knocks them back into shape. And some nightshift folks need it too. The anal retentive usually gather on dayshift (they are fun to mess with tooo) :chuckle

By the way, I have been a nurse for over 13 yrs and this is my second ER to work....it is the same everywhere. Just smile and carry on as if you never noticed.

Hi! My name is Trista, I have one year of high school left and I want to be an E.R Nurse. I wanted to see how you guys and girls went by becoming one and how do you like it. Please help!

As Tom said... "the Saga continues".... geeze.

I've worked ALL the shifts... and while I really enjoyed nights... I've noticed my attitude is perkier now that I'm back on days... so maybe that's part of the issue... chemical imbalances related to circadian rhythm changes created when people work when they should be sleeping... :: running away REAL fast, cuz I've noticed some of y'all don't have a sense of humor :: I"M KIDDING!!!! :chuckle

I think it's the old "grass is greener" idea... each shift has their own unique issues that the other shifts don't have... for some, bad feelings just breed under these conditions and you end up with a few bad apples (from EVERY shift) who help perpetuate the myths and stereotypes. I do my job to the best of my ability... I put in a little extra when I can to help the shift before or after me... and when I see the same done for me, I acknowledge it... I rarely acknowledge bad behavior, unless it affects patient care.

Our group actually gets along pretty well... other than the fact that our Night shift is comprised entirely of Travelers... which is frustrating because every 3 months we have to retrain and suffer through the same errors again and again... but that's not the fault of the Travelers....

Peace:)

Are the stars out tonight

Oh Thomas......I have your moon :roll

As I see it......Day shift folks are old and experienced, Night shift folks are young and fresh. All shifts have egos that need to be stroked. My dog is better than your dog, She is smarter, prettier, taller, svelter (?), barks louder & pets softer. In the words of Rodney King, "Can't we all just get along?" I agree with Tiiki, our ER is busy all the time, there is always someone trying to die--always. Night and day. ( Stress would be rampant if it wasn't for the bunch of goofs I work with.)

I don't think it matters where you work, wether it be in a nursing home, on the floor, the ER, rehab, etc, you are always going to have the shift bickers. The hospital I work at has the second busiest ER in the state, we see a lot of pt's (as does everyone else these days) and it is just a s busy on days as nights, although the difference lies in the staff and their relationships at night. We are actually friends, we like and help each other. It seems as though the dayers waste a lot of energy fighting against each other, and management.

I have a problem though. I can't imagine ever working anything but nights, however I can't imagine working on days for the above reasons. Eventually the sleep deprivation and altered hormone levels will catch up with me.
