Clinical mgr bs. Ed staff RN

Help!!!!! Life decision time and I need some input. I have been a cardiac/tele nurse for 3 years. I have the opportunity to either take a position in my hospital's ED as a staff rn or be a clinical manager on an intermediate care/tele floor in a brand new hospital. My clinical managers are telling me to run for the hills from the clin mgr position bc it is so hard/demanding already let alone with a brand new hospital and brand new nurses (hospital doesn't open till this summer).

I have only been a nurse for 3 years so a part of me feels like where do I get off being a clin manager already? And, I was really excited about the ED job before the clin mgr position fell in my lap, I'm so confused, heeeelp! Anyone???

Weigh your options.

If you take cli mani spot, it might not be that bad. You can always fall back into a staff position. If you take ed position, you may find it hard to slip back into manager spot.

If it were me, I would probably do that, but that's me. Advancement in nursing can be tough. 3 years and you're offered management? I would jump on that

Do you want to be a bedside nurse or would you enjoy being a manager? I personally would miss bedside and have no desire at this point in my career to be a manager. Good luck with your decision!

Thanks for the advice. Clin mgr would still be by the bedside more than a nurse mgr. I'm making my pros and cons list now. Crossing my fingers this all goes smoothly.

I was told a long time ago that after all your deliberations you flip a coin.......

They way it works is you flip a coin and pick heads for job 1 and tails for job 2. The coin lands, let's say on heads. So it's job 1. If you are happy with that, then it's job 1, if instead you think, "lets do two out of three", then you know it's job 2.

I've never really used the technique, but it made an impression, and it has made me realize that no matter how analytical my thought process is I need to connect with my inner desires and understand which way they want me to go as well. Sometimes, they are in conflict and then the question is which should win?

Good luck with whatever decision you make.
