I am a student nurse and was wondering how is it possible for someone to get a fungal infection from intermittent catheterization?

Its possible to get any type of infection when introducing anything into an urethra. Multiple introductions into an urethra just increases the possibilities.

So couldn't someone just apply an ointment or something to remove the rash?

It needs to be cultured, and treated with antibiodics , Im sure there is a whopping UTI in there as well.

Definitely.... you can get anything really.... especially when you see some clients techniques!!!!

An ointment will only kill the fungus it touches, on the outside of the body. Likely the infection has spread right up the urethra via the catheter. So antibiotics by mouth or IV have to be used.

Thank you very much.
