To all HD nurse in Cali, please say something you know about my queries. I am an Illinois HD RN. What's in Cali why there's so many jobs opening in HD? What is the ball park hourly salary for acutes? What is the Cali labor law why there's automatic over time for working more than 10 hours to 12 hours? is that true, correct me if i am wrong. I'm planning to move there...Your input is greatly appreciated in advance.

California RNs get time and a half pay after 8 hours and double time pay after 12 hours. I believe that it's state law, probably because most of the hospitals or all of them are unionized. I worked in southern California briefly.. it seems that acute dialysis nurses make in the $40-60 /hr range. I wouldn't accept less then $40 in CA. This probably sounds amazing coming from Illinois, but just important to keep in mind that a house likely will cost $400-700,000 for a middle class family home. Not to mention that gas is much higher, groceries, and well it seems like everything. I think there's a lot of job openings for acute dialysis nurses in any large market area. California is a very densely populated state, so there are a lot of openings. The nurses I worked with were quite unhappy because Davita sort of required them to work 18-24 hour days.. I'm sure the overtime pay was great, but who wants to live like that just to afford a $5/gallon tank of gas?

Thanks for explaining the labor law OT reasons. I believed Cali RN are well compensated base on standard of living among other big taxes high standard of living states such as IL, NY, NJ. I must say the housing is too much if you decide to buy a house in Cali. Otherwise, I can say, we, in IL RN are not compensated because we have higher taxes than Cali, our groceries have taxes unlike Cali, starting salary at 23/hr, real estate taxes are high here also (but cheaper median housing price) and if San Francisco has $5/Gal gas, Chicago has it too. Our OT kicks in after 40 hours. I appreciate the reply.
