hi, I am looking into periopetative care nursing. The first courses have opened up but I just want to dote all my I first before dishing in a bunch of money. I have a Tremor. it's very mild and for the most part non existing since I have been on meds for it...propranolol. I just want to know if your hands have to be surgeon steady of if a mild mild Tremor every once in a while is ok?

I have taken the perioperative course for RPNs and it really doesn't involve having to perform in the OR. There is a different course for that. The perioperative course mostly covers pre op prep and goes over different types of anesthesia and recovery room procedures. If you are wanting to work in the OR you need to take the OR course for RPNs.

The mods may move this to the Canadian forum for a better response since American nurses won't know what you are talking about.

I do not want to discourage you in anyway from fulfilling your dreams. But as a scrub nurse steady hands in some situations are required. For example: handing up a micro suture during surgery to a surgeon, loading a vascular pledget on a needle driver using tiny sutures, collecting biopsy specimens off a biopsy forcep using a blunt hypo needle tip. Reloading a used suture on a needle driver. I would talk to an educator at your hospital to see if accommodations would exist in this area for you. Knowledge is always a good thing, but being able to steady hands under stress with tiny sharp (biohazardous) objects is important for safe practice. I hope this honest answer is helpful to you and not discouraging.
