Why isn't anyone answering this? I work for a sheriff who wants the officers to answer medical requests on weekends. I am telling him the state regulations state it should be a medically trained person such as an EMT at the very least. The reg actually states " At least one person per shift shall have training in (recieving screening, cardio pulmonary resuscitation and recognition of symptoms of illnesses most common to the facility") Recognition of symptoms requires formal training. Don't you think? it goes on to state "Jail officers shall be trained regarding recognition of mental illnes and retardation". Except for basic first aid, that's all the jailers need to know. So since they separated the "one person per shift" from the "Jail officers". I take it to mean specific medical training with some type of certificate. Please help. otherwise, I'll have to figure out how to train the sergeants to answer a medical request and not miss anything important and yet not make a medical decision either. I am not a certified to train anyone either.

I work in a county jail. Through out the whole week there is medical staff on call. If they incounter any problems they just give us a call.

We are DOC holding. The state standards state that the medical requests are to be collected -and- responded to daily. I am the only nurse. I am on call 24/7 but the state inspector wanted the requests responded to. The inspector stated he had problems at other jails with jailers responding to requests making medical decisions.

Oh well, the sheriff decided he would just have me work 7 days a week for the same salary instead of spending any money.:nono:

I work in a county jail and we have nurses on staff 24 hours/7 days a week. I do know that they used to NOT have medical staff... I guess maybe 5 yrs ago? They did have staff on call though. I would think that it would have be an urgent/emergent issue to be seen on the weekend? If thats the case they would need to be triaged and either sent to the ER, housed in medical or sent back the the block.
