Hi,

I'm a new grad with a BSN and have an upcoming interview in an Ohio Correctional Facility. What should I expect in the interview? Jobs are real tight here in Ohio. I would like to be prepared and nail this. Also, what is the normal starting range? Does it really start at Step 1 of the Nurse 1 pay range scale for the state of Ohio ($24.90) or is there room for negotitiation? and what should I expect working for the State of Ohio Rehabilitation and Corrections?

thanks in advance for any feedback!

I am in Ohio too. How did your interview go?

I also have an upcoming interview in Ohio and am wondering what to expect.

I have experience, but not in corrections.

Any other nurses here working in Ohio corrections?

How did you guys go about applying for a state nursing job? Was it a continous posting? I was thinking about correctional nursing and was wondering how everything went with everyones interview..

I'm curious to know how your interview went. I have an interview tomorrow with an Ohio Correctional facility.

Did they do a credit check?

The interview I had was quick. A "panel" of two people asked me seven questions. Several interviews were scheduled and supposedly we all got the same questions.

I thought it was an easy interview and feel pretty certain I answered the questions well even though I don't have corrections experience. They were general nursing type questions so I think I did okay. The state website said a min of 6 months nursing experience, and I have over ten years including PCU, ER and OR... however I have not heard anything back so who knows. I did hear the processing takes a minimum of six weeks so it's possible I will still hear something. I hope so as jobs are very hard to find in my area.

How did it go for you?

Hello there,

I was interviewed two weeks ago- they called last week and offered me the job! I am so excited. I'm just waiting for an academy date; they said it would take about a month for everything to go through and to get a date.

There were 2 positions open, 3 more need to be approved after 7/1. A total of 5! I hope you get called soon.

I was interviewed by a panel of three people. I was asked 7 questions as well.

I applied in Ohio the the beginning of April. I interviewed May 12th by a panel of 2. I was asked several questions & she wrote down my answers. At the end of the interview I was given paperwork for a background check to fill out & invited back to a tour. The tour was held 1 week later & there were 10 of us present. Out of the 60+ who interviewed, the ones that didn't get background check papers didn't answer questions right & were not getting hired. I was then placed in the "pool" & was called the end of August saying they were starting my background check. My employer received my paperwork right away, but they waited 3 weeks to fill it out. I then received a start date for 1 week of orientation which will be the end of October & then I go to the Academy for 3 weeks. Very long process, but hopefully it will be well worth the wait!

Vonda-

Congrats on landing the position! I love working in corrections. CTA (Corrections training academy) was a big bite in the butt, but it will be over soon. I ended up staying at a hotel; I couldn't do the dorms.

I'm in a close/max facility. I'd say 90% of the inmates aren't bad- they're just doing their time. It's the other 10% who are scary. You even have to watch some of the officers, but the majority of them do their job. I guess nurses have a hell of a reputation in Ohio for sleeping with inmates- don't be offended when they go on and on and on about not sleeping with inmates. It gets old, but you do get a thick skin after hearing it so many times.

I'm happy for you!

Hello to fellow Ohio Nurses! I had an interview at Warren prison in Lebanon, Ohio almost 3 weeks ago. I keep calling but they haven't made a decision yet. I was interviewed by a panel of 3. Sounds about the same as the rest of you. Ohio really is the pits for finding any kind of nursing job right now. I chose to quit my last job (OR nurse) the middle of July. I've never had a problem getting a job in Dayton but there are none to be had in the OR. I would like to get a corrections nursing job. I am taking a 5 credit hour college course in Corrections Nursing. This forum is a wealth of information also. I applied for the Warren job on line at Ohio.gov site. Most prisons have continuous postings but occasionally one will have an open date attached to it.

Good luck to all of you in your job hunt. I'd be interested in what part of Ohio you are from and what prisons did you apply to?

Thanks Eirene!

I had no idea about the rep that correction nurses have here in Ohio. I guess I'll find out. lol

I start the policies & procedures part of my orientation tomorrow. I'm so nervous. Late 1 time in the 6 month probation period & we're done! Kinda scary. I'm never late, but it's still a scary thought this winter. Was the training academy that rough? I will be working 3rds. It will be in Columbus.
