Nurse Practitioner Pay in Federal BOP

Specialties Correctional

Published

I am having a hard time finding out what the pay is for federal corrections. Applied and waiting to hear for an interview - although they expect me to get the job as I'm the only applicant. I have heard once I accept an offer, it is non-negotiable, and that I should research what others make so I dont get upset. I have been working as an NP now for a year. They did say they would beat my current salary as long as I bring in a paystub, however I did not get a raise due to the hospital system not giving raises after the first year (it turns out my one year raise will be in october, where I will have been here almost 2!). Just wondering if there are other NP's that are in federal corrections and what they bring in.Thanks!

I work in corrections now in California I am making $40.11 an hour. Working for 'GEO GROUP' a private company that manages prison with CDCR. They don't know anything about running a medical department; however they pay is amazing for a 1st year RN. I am in backgrounds with the BOP

I know it has been a while for this thread, but I noticed on USA jobs that they offer recruitment incentives now? Can anyone back up if they actually do this or do you have to live in a high cost of living area to get the incentive?

I just got hired as an RN to BOP in August 2019, they are currently still having Recruitment or Retention incentives, ours was 10% of base pay. I got hired at GS 10 step 10 and annual leave credit of 8hr/pay, so with the bonus the pay was fair...I have been an RN for 20 years though. We are not in a high cost of living area. I am also hearing that if they offer the Retention bonus, you can possibly get it every year....our MLP's do.

My wife is trying to maintain her federal service as a Nurse Practitioner and the BOP is the only federal employer in the area hiring right now. Do you know if they offer retention incentives to NP's to get them up to market pay? I noticed you said you got it as an RN, so I didn't know if it translated that way to NP's as well. She's currently a GS-12 Step 4. Also, how are you liking the job so far?

Yes, we have MLPs and they get yearly retention bonuses to increase their pay to more competitive level....but our MLPs only go to GS 11.

NP"s  can get  G11 step 10 with 4 years exsperiance as a NP. Benefits includes time off, Student loan repayment, and Leo retirement pension which is 1.7%x 20 years then 1% for 21+ years. There are also other options you can choose such as retaining bonus, hiring bonus. In my opion this makes it close to what one can make at private office. However one gets to retire in 20 years with a pension instead of working 30+ years. if you have more questions feel free to PM me.
