Whoo hoo! I started my new job last week. I'm the DON at the state women's prison just a 4 miles from my house. Although I have been a nurse for 13 years, I've never done corrections before. They gave me a choice between the county jail (very large and busy and all men), or the state women's prison (max security). The intakes are not done at this women's prison, and this is where all the pregnant, geriatric, and chronically ill females go. They have a mother-baby unit too. It seems very calm and orderly here. The former DON is now the HSA and has been there 10 years. There is an LPN who has been there 10 years who won the nationwide bronze award for CMS (the company I work for), the infection control nurse has been there 24 years. There are several others who have been there a long time. It seems I will have lots of good support.

The complex is on 15 acres and the grounds are beautiful. I'm so excited to be working there. It seems like a job I can retire from. Of course I've only been there a week and am still seeing everything through rose colored glasses. Hopefully I will still love it and still be excited about it in a few months.

Congratulations! I don't think I would want to work in a womans prison, but I'm glad you like your new job. From the sounds of things, the staff has been there long enough to have things running pretty smoothly.

I wish you the best of luck...I would rather work with men any day. We have one unit of women where I work and I dread dealing with them...women are so much more violent and foul than the men...But, I can't think of any place I have worked in the past few years retaining nurses for so long...so that is a really promising sign...I hope you love this change!!
