I am planning on relocating to the Bay City area in 6-9 months. I am a correctional nurse here in Nevada. My goal is to work for the Michigan DOC. I can't imagine doing anything but corrections when I move there. I also plan on going back to school for my BSN or MSN. My goal to be a NP in the prison system.

Thanks.

I had posted early last year about what is going on in Michigan's prisons and it isn't good. Michigan's Department of Corrections Health Care Services is under federal investigation for neglect and negligent practices. They were on "60 minutes" last February for this. From what I gather (they tell us nothing), the investigation is wrapping up and so far, all they have managed to do is blame their physician contract providers and not deal with their own issues, much of which are at the management levels. In my opinion, MDOC is a good place to lose your license right now, until they deal with their management issues.

Thanks karbyr for a response.

I do still think I will pursue the correctional route when I get to Bay City. I will probably stay per diem because of the huge pay cut I will be taking moving from the NDOC to the MDOC the per diem rates are closer to what I make now and, also, so I can work at several prisons before I decide where I want to work, or not work. I also am looking into MidMichigan Hospital in Midland evn though I haven't stepped foot in a hospital for 5 years. I have heard really good things about this hospital and, hopefully, the pay will be better than the MDOC. I still have time before I move, so I plan on doing more job research before I decide. Have a good day.

Did you end up taking the Michigan job? What do you think?

I have an interview Wednesday for the Freeland prison. I hate the 8 hour shifts...I also have a interview at one of the hospitals Tuesday. I kinda dread going back into hospital nursing, but the change of environment might be good for me, and maybe the nurses will be professional. I didn't see a lot of professionalism in the prison. The job wasn't a bad job it was the employees that were difficult...I will post later what happens after my interview(s).
