Correctional nursing at Sierra Conservation in Jamestown CA

I'm a 20yr. of experience RN here in CA and live close to Sierra Conservation Prison in Jamestown. I'm seriously considering applying, but I'm fairly clueless about working in a prison. Does anyone out there work at SCC? What is a typical day like for an RN? How do they work out scheduling for weekends and holidays? Is there "mandatory" overtime - how does it work? Is it a union environment? Whew - enough questions for now. Thanks for your help...........

The hiring nurses said they liked to see all the enthusiastic, smart nurse coming in to be interviewed. I have experience working with HIV, in a community clinic, volunteering in a prison and an interest in public health. San Quentin has a volunteer education program if you want to get experience. Also I have friends who do workshops for men and women in county jails in the Bay Area. I would get some volunteer experience in any area you are interested. I think my extensive volunteer experience was part of the reason I was called into many interviews as a new grad compared to my other classmates.
