Nvcc pre-reqs

I found (finally) pre reqs offered at a time when I can take them. Specifically at nvcc on Sundays. Since I was previously a student at ncc I had to apply to nvcc and have to register as a new student. New student registration isn't available for another 2 weeks or so... Anyone know how quickly this particular section fills up? I know Sunday classes are rare and I'm assuming they're pretty popular for those of us who work during the week... I'm worrying it don't stand a chance of getting a seat. Anyone know if this section fills up quickly or not? I'm looking at chemistry this fall. Thanks!

I took a few Sunday classes at NVCC a couple years back. At that time, there were very few students in the class. If my memory serves me, it was an earlier (morning) class and it wasn't a time or day most people want to get up to attend a 3+ hour class :)

All new students have to meet with an advisor before they can register. If you don't meet with yours, you won't be able to register and if you try, it won't let you in the class and it will say "advising hold".

Are you sure this is accurate? I never had to meet with an advisor to take classes at NVCC. Also, last semester I was worried about getting in to a particular Nutrition class, so I registered at 3-4 other Connecticut Community Colleges. I was able to register at those schools without any sort of advising.

yup. positive...you only have to if it is your first semester there...so only new students-not continuing...this is from the admissions page on the website:

"All new degree-seeking students are required to meet with an advisor before registering. Non-degree students are encouraged to meet with an advisor, as some classes may require advisor permission or acceptance into a special program in order to enroll."

So, her only way to not meet w an advisor is if she is non-degree

Well that's good to know. I'm only taking classes there at this time - not seeking a degree thru nvcc. That might change, but I'm non degree for now. :)

I just checked, and it looks like there are still numerous open spots. You should probably be okay.

As someone else mentioned, if it fills up, check back often. I learned the hard way that there is no wait list. According to people in registration, there used to be wait lists but they got too complicated to administer, so now it's just finders keepers. You have to be online when a seat opens up, and they can be at odd times like 2am. There's no way to set an alert; you just have to check.

NVCC will NOT over enroll. Learned that the hard way, too. The professors have no power to waive you into the class, even when they KNOW someone is going to drop. It comes down to liability, and the number of students who are allowed to be in a laboratory space. The problem is that if a student drops 2 weeks into the course, it's already too late for another student to take the empty spot because the "add" period is usually only a week. And FTR, some of the professors honestly wish they could waive more students into the course because they know that drops are guaranteed.

If you don't get in there, Housatonic CC also has chem on Sundays in the fall, so that might be worth a look. Also, there are several sections of Saturday chem sprinkled through the different CCs; could you possibly do a Saturday course?

I'm psyched that there's still spots open - I've been checking daily. I can register as of this coming Tuesday. Now I'm getting cold feet tho. I feel guilty that I won't be spending those Sundays with my kids. I work Saturdays so Sunday is traditionally our family day. I don't know what to do. :(

I know what you mean. I've been doing everything I can to avoid clinical placements on weekends so I can be with my family. I had Saturday labs this spring, and my husband was going a bit nuts having the boys to himself that day. But it's what I had to do to move myself along. It's not forever.

Is there a way you can make another day be family day, even if not a whole day? Maybe do a special family night on Fridays where you all go mini golfing or something. The important thing is to have time to spend together, not the day it's on. Plus, the Sunday class doesn't start until a bit past noon. You could totally go out to brunch or something on Sunday morning.

It's going to be tricky because you are probably going to want to spend your free time studying. And you are going to have to do some of that. But also MAKE time for your family; it will be good for them and good for you, too.

Also, consider that most nurses work alternating weekends and holidays. If this is the profession we want, our families are going to have to get used to family time being scheduled for unconventional times. It will be okay.

And I can feel myself getting cold feet. I always do this! I was so excited to be registered and now I'm getting scared. I keep thinking of all the cons. I'll be away from my family on Sundays (I work Saturdays so I feel like I'll never see them). I'll be driving about an hour each way for school. I'll have to stop working when and if I eventually get into a nursing program and I'm afraid of the strain that will put on my family. Are these warranted concerns or am I over thinking this? Geez... Advice? Encouragement?
