2-3 years of nursing should make you very competitive for the program. There are usually 3-4 RNs in ever class. As far as the job market, its very competitive. Between the two PA programs producing ~70 graduates a year and those who go out of state for school its tough for a new grad to break in. Also you run into what we call the view tax. Those mountains you see in the morning cost about $5-10k in salary. If you have reasonable expectations and flexibility the first couple of years there are jobs out there though.
