Metro State Accreditation

U.S.A. Colorado

Does anyone know why Metro State has a warning on their NLNAC accreditation? I'm planning on applying for the next start group in Spring 2012 and am worried about their accreditation.

Continuing Accreditation with Warning - Spring 2013

Wonder what that is about? I'm sure you'll be fine. Their NCLEX pass rate last year was 97% and the three year avg is 88.5%. I know Metro catches flak for the way some programs run (my cousin goes there, is fed up with them, but not in nursing). AFAIK their nursing program has a good rep.

I called both the NLN and Metro. The NLN told me that if for some reason Metro does not pass the inspection, the nurses that graduate right after that (who were in the school part of the time when it was accredited) will have gone to a school that is not NLN accredited and may have problems with future education and employment. However, when I talked to Metro, they said they were already taking the steps necessary to rectify the situation.... It still makes me worried though. I would hate to spend that kind of money (if i get it for this January 2012) only to find out right before I graduate that the school lost its NLN accreditation. Decisions, decisions....

I think it should also be taken into consideration that the BSN program is 35 people a year, so that means if 4 people fail you get an 88.5%. Not sure if that is taken into consideration but I'm sure they will be fine

Thanks for the updates. I was just accepted into CU's nursing program and will be going there. I know that Metro is a good school and I'm sure that they will satisfy the NLN's requirements.

I just checked NLNAC's website. "If full compliance with the accreditation standards is not demonstrated within two years, continuing accreditation will be denied." Anyone who applied for metro's 2012 intake know anything about this? I am starting to worry as well.

@ Audrey22. Yes, I found out more! I found out that Metro's accreditation is good through June 2013. So if for some reason they are not granted continuing accreditation, the 2012 cohort will still be accredited (not sure how hospitals and other schools will look at that if they school does lose NLN accreditation). I also know some of the reasons they were given the warning: The head of the program needs to have a PhD. (metro recently hired a new person to full fill this requirement), a certain percentage of the nursing teachers needed to have their PhD (many of the teachers are in PhD programs and/or recently graduated from their PhD program after the NLN left so they are close meeting this requirement), something about their course descriptions either not being detailed enough or not describing the classes accurately (metro is in the process of re-writing these). I feel like there is something else I am missing... Anyway that is what I was told. I still feel like this is the best program for me despite some lingering concerns. Good luck to you and I hope to see you this January (waiting to hear from them is going to be the death of me!! lol)

It looks like MSU Denver was successful in their review. Their accreditation page now says that they were granted continuing accreditation in June 2013 that is good for eight years. They list their next scheduled evaluation visit as spring of 2021.
