Personally, I'm a little disappointed that CNA will no longer be a union for nurses. An environmental service technician is not going to understand the critical issues bedside nurses face. Are dietary staff going to want to strike because nursing has decided to strike regarding a patient safety matter? I'm not saying this to be elitist; I just think adding non-nursing staff runs the potential of diluting the message.

Maybe I misread the homepage of the NUHW, but it sounds like it includes a lot of staff who are not nurses.

Amen. SEIU is an example of what happens when low skilled uneducated workers are manipulated into forming a union. If you examine the shenanigans SEIU has been involved in in the last decade why would any nurse want to be represented by these people. I'm an outsider looking in but what happens to the CNA affects me because they have always been at the forefront of safety issues at the bedside. It was the first state nursing organization to break with the ANA over the things that mattered to bedside nurses. Staffing. Safety. Collective bargaining. I don't see the affiliation with the NUHW being a positive thing.

The workers voted to decertify SEIU in favor of the National Union of Healthcare workers.

They did NOT join the California Nurses Association, which is a professional association and labor union of registered nurses.

NUHW is affiliated with CNA, not part of CNA.

The ballots have been counted, and nearly 700 employees of Seton Medical Center in Daly City and Seton Coastside in Moss Beach have voted to oust SEIU-UHW in favor of NUHW-CNA.

... “With this vote, the majority of Seton workers have decided not to roll over and let management cut our healthcare and retirement benefits,” said Respiratory Therapist Suad Husary, “and we’re not going to let management short-change patient care.”...

Seton workers vote to join NUHW - NUHW

Thanks for the clarification. An affiliation not a merger. Sometimes I get lost in the alphabet soup.

I do remember SEIU's antics. What was so great about CNA was that it broke off from the ANA (which has abandoned bedside nurses long ago). CNA seemed genuinely invested in the issues affecting bedside nurses.

Thanks from me, too.
