unexpected benefit of working as CNA

Nursing Students CNA/MA

I have only been working as a CNA for about 9 days. Im working at a LTC center and I love it. There is the normal stress that occurs with a new job (learning the routine and people etc.) but I am experiencing an unexpected blessing. While I am caring for the residents my mind is still and quiet and I feel content and peaceful. Many of these people are so helpless and totally dependent on others to care for their basic needs. It is just another confirmation that nursing is the right path for me. I hope I still feel like what Im doing is worthwhile a few months from now and it just doesnt become mindless movement. I look in their eyes and I wonder about their minds. Who are they? What was their lives like before age or illness robbed them of the independence.

Im glad your enjoying your new job!! :nuke:

About a month ago I started my job as a personal care assistant in a dementia unit in an assistant living community. Since I have started I have came home feeling I,ve made somewhat of a difference for my residents day and that my job is completlely worth it. My residents thankyous and kisses goodnight mean the world to me!:heartbeat

This has been said a million times, but has to be learned by everyone on a one-for-one basis.

We look at old people and all you see are old people. You just don't think they were your age once, had hopes and dreams, careers, did foolish things, did great things, or simply lived a 'quiet' life as many of us do.

If you can keep that perspective that even though their health is compromised, or 'diminished', they have a lifetime of experience....

But yes, it's difficult to deal with 'nasty' residents............

I start my CNA class next weekend and am looking forward to it. :lol2: They say nursing is a very rewarding career and it sounds like it starts right off the bat.

Just keep in mind that some day we will be in their shoes. We will have someone waiting on us hand and foot and we also may get a little cranky but if you were in their position, wouldn't you be?

Good luck to ya! I hope you continue to love it!:heartbeat
