Today was only my second day on the med/surg floor and yes it was crazy crazy busy... But so far I absolutely love what I have done the past 2 days!!! Yes the job can get pretty gross (saw some pretty gross wounds today) But helping people gives me the most amazing feeling ever!!!! Even the non compliant dementia patients too. I got this little lady to smile and laugh today and it really warmed my heart!! I am so sure that I am in the right career field and cannot wait to become a nurse, but for the time being I love my job!!! :D

This was a refreshing post. You can only read so many posts about how much people hate their jobs before you feel like gagging. ;)

Congrats on your new job & I hope you continue to love it.

That is awesome. Can you tell me more about working med/surg? I am a new cna in a LTCF and I am hoping to get into the hospital after I get a little more experience. I'd just like to know how your duties differ? And what your "typical" day is like? (I know there are no typical days really probably but ykwim). Thanks!

I currently work in a LTCF as an aide.

I most recently got a job as an NA in a hospital on the ortho floor. I can't wait to start!

Yes I want to hear too, tell us about a "typical day" in Med/Surg. How many patients do you have? How much time do you get to spend with them?

Congrats!!! :yeah: , when do you start?

Orientation on July 10, 11 and 12!

Will get my unit schedule then :)

Well I start my day at 7 and get report from the pct. The average number of patients I was told when I was hired was 12. However my second day they were very short staffed and had 17 (was a totally insane day) After I get report I start making my rounds and do vitals on everyone and refill waters. Then after vitals I start the personal care like bed baths, changing beds, some patients we can get are total care so I have to feed them their meals too. Also at the same time answering any call lights too. The hospital's main clients are the elderly so most of them are fall risks. Anyway around 12 is time for vitals again after that I take a lunch then when I come back finish with the personal care which takes me up till vitals again at 4. It can get crazy with discharges and admits too. Our ortho floor is closed due to census so we get those patients too when they come up they have to be hooked to the monitors and chart their vitals every 15 mins for an hour. My shift ends at 7:30 and I am usually running all day long. But I love it! The nurses help out because sometimes there is just no way to get everything done in one shift. Everyone has been extremely nice thus far. :)

It sounds like you have a great schedule down for yourself!
