Will you expereinced help Me!?!

Hi, my name is Renee and i am currently in a BSN program and set to graduate in 2010. I want to go back for my Master's after about a good year of nursing, but I don't know what to go back for!! I can tell you where i want to take my nursing career. I want to first get my foundation in med-surg for the first year, but I have a passion for public health. I would love to spend some years in a health dept working as a nurse, but my ultimate career goal is to start a program for teengage girls that will educate them on health, nutrition, all that comes along with sex, life skills, self esteem , pregnancy.. pretty much any and everything that young girls face while growing up! Another idea that i had was to possibly have a clinic on site as well that would offer check-ups and other services. I have been looking into schools that have the Community/Public Health Specialist (CNS) program, but also those that have Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Women's Health Practitioner track. I don't know what i'm doing! should i be going in a different direction or pathway? Please Help ME!!

Renee - I think you have answered your own question - wait just a little bit until you graduate and get some experience and by then, you will have a better idea of what you want to do. Good luck.

Renee,

You have plenty of time to decide what trek you want to take. Give yourself a break...focus on getting your BSN. Once you've done that, you'll figure out what to do next.

I followed the CNS path and got mine in Rural and Community Health...it was the perfect choice for me. I'm now going back to work on my DNP. You have lots of time. Don't pressure yourself with your long term goals or you'll risk losing sight of your short term goals.

Pace yourself. I would seriously urge you to have much more than a year of nursing before you go back to get a master's. You need 5 years at least in different paths, investigating different areas and getting some hard core experience before trying to be an expert in any field.

It takes at least 12 months of working full time in each position to evolve into being a competent, well-rounded, good nurse. Get there first, work a little more and let it percolate before going back to school. You have your whole life ahead of you-don't plunge into it unprepared and burn out.

Time and experience are your friends.
