What's fun about it?

Specialties CRNA

Published

Please share why you want or wanted to be a CRNA. What is so great about it? I don't really find a lot of information about why it would be nice to be a CRNA?

At an interview, if someone asked you why you want to be one, what would your response be?

Thank you.

I think this has been addressed in multiple posts in the past. But here are a few of my reasons

challenge

autonomy

I enjoy providing anesthesia, and having the patient respond exactly the way that I want them to and wake up exactly the way I want them to. So, for me it is fun to determine what anesthetic regime will work best for each patient. Then achieving what I set out to do. If my choice does not work as well as I would have liked than I learn modifications. So, maybe a bit of a control freak.

I like the high tech stuff and this field is full of it.

I like going into the room of a women who is in labor and miserable and walking out of a room where the woman is in labor and comfortable.

I like evaluating each patient to determine their needs. (I have always thought of it as a bit of a whodonit thing, where is the secret for this patient. What are the concerns, what needs to be fixed before we begin etc.)

I like taking care of people.

I like performing procedures that require skill, it gives me a sense of proficiency.

I could go on ad nauseum. But, the truth is I really like almost everything about providing anesthesia. So for me there is no better job in the world. (I am still a student, will finish this month)

i'll probably get flamed for this.

1. you're more in control of patient care, you finally get to make the decisions. one of the tops reasons.

2. no more, i want some water, you cant have any your npo, i want some water, you cant have any doctor says nothing by mouth, i want some water, i'm sorry you cant have anything by mouth, i want some water, no...and many more...you get the picture.

3. very little adl's, baths, G.I. bleed poop, bowel preps.

4. financial compensation comensurate with the job.

5. better hours, (i usually work all nights)

6. more respect

7. the many intangibles.

i would like to say i have done all the above whithout hesitation but i just dont like dealing with other peoples excrement, for example, i dont even like my own. i'm not the touchy feely kind of nurse either. g_d bless the ones that are because we need 'em.

THOSE ARE SOME OF THE EXACT REASONS i AM CHOOSING TO GO INTO ANESTHESIA. Yes, I am sure it will have its negatives, but it is so much better than being a regular nurse. As you mentioned, I also have the utmost respect for the nurses at the bedside, it is usually a very hard job with little autonomy or respect.

No flaming here. You took the words right out of my mouth. :D

Thank you for your time in answering this question. The answers your provided has helped. When you had your interview to go to the school you wanted to....did they ask you why you wanted to go into this? The answers you gave here....is that what you told them? Do you think it is okay to basically tell them...you like the control?

Thanks

I am pleased to see no flaming to gaspassah's reply. On other boards, people make it seem like if you dont love wiping the patients butts, and so on, you should not go into nursing. I realize that is part of the job, and I will do it. But my sights are definetly set on the day I become a CRNA and can use my hands for another skill!

Does anyone "REALLY" like wiping butts anyway??? I think most of us just put up with it as part of the job. Do what you have to do and move on...thats the way I look at it anyway...nope I dont like wiping orifice and yes thats one of the MANY reasons I plan on going into anesthesia...its a fascinating field.:)

I imagine that if you did like wiping butts, you wouldn't be accepted into nursing school. I wonder if there is a DSM-IV classification for such an individual.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to just focus on the 'behind'....but when other posters make it seem like they would rather focus other things than the 'less glamorous side' of nursing--they get flamed and told to look for another line of work. Certainly nursing school is very rigorous, and nurses do more than just cleaning up after the patients.
