How did you do it?

Specialties CRNA

 My Dh wants to be a CRNA. he's finishing his bachelors now, and is looking at the different schools, etc....but is concerned cuz i don't work (right now) and we have 2 kids, with one on the way. So he doesn't know how we'll do it when he goes to CRNA school with 3 kids to manage. i KNOW it can be done, and i'm sure i'll be back to work by the time he gets into school. But honestly.........how did you do it? Financially and such? i'm scared to death to buy a house cuz i don't know if it would be worth it or not at this point. If we have to move for him to go to school, that's fine. But most programs he's talking about are 2-3 years. And full time, so how can we manage? I'm COMPLETELY supportive and will do whatever it takes to get him thru school. i'm hoping he'll be able to get some schlorships, etc...to help with expenses while he's attending. But is there anywhere i should be looking for him? Any type of programs, schlorships, any type of assistance? I'm hoping we don't have to do school loans when he goes, but if that's the only way then so be it. Just looking for some guidance from the pros!!! ;)

you said it well, zrmorgan!

modest 1800 square foot house....over one-hundred thousand dollars. (we are now renting it out)

GRE examination fees + study guides...two hundred dollars.

application fees....four hundred dollars

plane tickets+hotel stay+ rental car before interview to anesthesia school...one thousand dollars

cost of crna program plus relocation/books/health insurance/rent/tuition/lifeinsurance etc....$125,000.

getting a job that is more autonomous and challenging....priceless (actually it is not...double your income in 2.5 years)

Yea, yea, that stuff is important too, but always follow the money it is tells you more about most things and it hardly never lies. Money talks and bulls**t walks.

You forget the biggest cost which is the opportunity cost (i.e. you could have been working during those 2.5 years), that adds around $150,000 in costs plus you could have worked some overtime and maybe gotten another $20,000.

Actually, I did I the calculations and it is your somewhere around $750,000 - $1,000,000 ahead by going to CRNA school, and I used very pessimistic numbers. That will buy a lot more then a 1800 sq. ft. house in Kansas.

Doctors don't become doctors because they love people or because they are out to save the human race. Remember what Adam Smith ( the father of modern economic capitalism) said, "It is not the baker's benevolence that feeds the people, it is his greed!"
