  1. That's right people act differently when they have to pay for a service. There is no "right" to health care! If you want health care pull out your wallet and pay for it. Stop coming up with new "rights"! You don't have a "right" to health care, because I do not have no obligation to pay for someone elses health care!
  2. What our government needs to do is deploy our Armed forces where they were intended to be deployed on US soil to protect the US from INVASION! That's right this is an invasion, and history has shown that if you are unable or unwilling to protect you country you will lose it! Any country that is unable or unwilling to protect its borders from foreign invaders is NOT a country. Countries have borders that they protect religiously; it is borders that geographically define a country. Countries go to war to protect borders. Should we provide healthcare to foreign invaders? Isn't this question absurd on its face? Health cares a right? Lets see if I can remember that line, "...life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and Health care." It seems different then what I remember it.
  3. Simple, the doctors have traditionally gotten almost all of the health care pie, and AA's are a way that they can keep control and set policy. The doctors want to recieve the fees for all services, and then HIRE helpers who do all the work and just get an hourly wage. No head to head competition for those fees.
  4. Nilepoc, I am saying that nurses have very little clout in politics which is one the problems with nursing. The AMA has sets the policies and direction for Health Care in the US, and if you notice the wages of doctors has always went up. You don't see a flood of doctors from other countries coming to the US do you? Why? Do you think that there are millions of doctors who would love to make $200,000/year instead of making $10,000/year? The AMA has erected all sorts of barriers to keep them out! They can't get visas, thier education is not applicable, and even their years of experience do not count. It is the AMA's position that foriegners practice medicine with voodoo dolls or something. Go to INS.GOV and you will see that you get the express track to get a visa if your a nurse, because there is a shortage of nurses. To become a nurse all they have to do is pass an english test and the RN test in that state. No barriers there, just a paved highway! There is a shortage of nurses. The million dollar question is why is there a shortage of nurses? Is it some skill that foriegners are necessary to fill the vacancies? The main reason that there is a shortage of nurses is that nursing has had historically low wages! Once women could choose any occupation they wanted they no longer choose nursing, because there are many higher paying occupations that have less stress. If you allow thousands of foriegn nurses to fill the vacant slots what will happen? Wages will fall or stay stagnant. Will Americans want to spend $50,000 to go get a BSN? No. In my opinion, the current shortage is a good thing it will drive up the salary of nursing. As the salaries go up you get more talented people, and more educational and professional options for people interested in nursing. I think that there should immigration to the US, and particularly immigration of talented people. But it seems that occupations like interests of nursing have been adequately represented in US policy.
  5. Sure, but it is almost impossible for them to get a visa to get here and take the test, and even then they aren't allowed to just to take the USMLE to become a doctor. It's hard to pass a test that you are not allowed to take. And very few foriegner doctors can afford to go med school in the US, because of the cost. The AMA has convinced everyone that the foreign doctors have all gotten substandard training, but the training the nurses from these same foreign countries have received is O.K.
  6. Well, our wonderful congress has taken up the issue, and given foriegn nurses priority for visas. They do not have to wait in the general visa pool they have thier own classification. This is not done for any other profession. They only have to take a couple of test and thier experience and education all transfer. This so they keep down the salary of nurses. Meanwhile, doctors, dentists, etc. do not receive priority for visas so they have wait almost forever in the general visa pool. When they do get here almost every state will make them repeat at least one or two years or more of medical school and thier residency. Only then can they go sit for board examinations. Who do you think has the better lobby and control of the US congress and state governments? Remember as supply of a skill increase wages decrease, assuming demand remains the same. True everyone wants a better life, but remember there are hundreds of millions of people who are willing to do your job for pennies compared to your current wage.
  7. AA Pros No experience required to go to grad school AA Cons Less Money Required to work directly under the supervision of an MDA Very few schools teach it CRNA Pros More Money More Autonomy (Not Required to work directly under the supervision of an MDA) CRNA Cons Requires a critical care experience as an RN Requires either a ADN + other BS degree or a BSN degree
  8. Jewelcutt, I have never had a 403B before, and I think you are talking about a loan? I am talking about talking money out and not repaying it. You will have to pay taxes on it, but it would minimal or zero because you will very little income and your tuition is tax deductable. The Administrator of your 403B may not let you withdraw money for education, but when you quit your present job I assume that you will roll your 403B over into a IRA. When it is in a IRA you know have all the authority for withdrawing money for whatever purpose, although you will be liable for penalties and taxes on withdrawals. But there will be no penalties when you use it for education, and as explained above little or no taxes. http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96283,00.html Notice 97-60 Using IRA Withdrawals To Pay Higher Education Expenses Beginning January 1, 1998, a taxpayer may make withdrawals from an individual retirement account (IRA) to pay the qualified higher education expenses for the taxpayer, the taxpayer's spouse, or the child or grandchild of the taxpayer or taxpayer's spouse at an eligible educational institution. The taxpayer will owe federal income tax on the amount withdrawn, but will not be subject to the 10 percent early withdrawal tax that applies when amounts are withdrawn from an individual retirement account before the account holder reaches age 59½.
  9. Why would you stop putting money into your Roth, 403b, or any other retirement vehicle to save for school? When you put money into your Roth, 403b, etc. you are saving for school, only you are getting a tax break to do it!
  10. Susswood, while I may have not edited my text properly, it was more understandable that crap you wrote. Your statement, "I work with several Seventh Day Adventists who are very nice, normal people. They are not "nuts.", is a load of crap! Try taking a philosophy class so your arguments will have some logic to them! You committed the error of "fallacy of composition". Why would you think that knowing couple of Seventh Day Adventists would allow you to assess whether SDA church is cult or nuts? Try reading the Church doctrine before you purport to have knowledge about the SDA church.
  11. Hi, I don't know anything about about the MTSU and how it incorporates the Seventh Day Adventists religion into the program. The SDA are nuts, they are a cult that is waiting for (wanting) the end of the world. I doubt that they impose any religious garbage on you because MTSU is a respected university. If your lucky it will follow the Jesuit tradition of education. Rigorous coursework and the practice of thier faith is left in thier temples instead of the classroom!
  12. From everything that I have read a Master of Nursing (MSN) is the only graduate degree that will allow you to become an NP. There are probably more then 20 CRNA programs that do not confer an MSN degree, and several that will give Post Graduate Certificates if you already have an MSN degree. All the programs are listed programs at aana.com.
  13. I appreciate your reply Dave. It shows the wisdom of experience.
  14. Wow, that quite a statement of support. In an earlier post you said, "have more autonomy, and you probably will be expected to be a smarter, beter nurse. All things good for your future as well as your stay in the ICU. " So, is just the autonomy and expectations that you will perform that makes a teaching hospital better? Money is a difficult thing to pass up.
