There is a high rate of drug abuse among anesthesia providers in general. But, there is not a high burn out rate.

Anesthesia providers do face a high risk of chemical dependency; latest numbers show it to be (over the course of a career) one in five. Yes, 20%.

According to a seminar I recently attended, there's a high rate for drug abuse in several professional, high stress, atmospheres. Nurses, doctors, lawyers, etc. The disease of addiction is not picky...

There is a high rate of drug abuse among anesthesia providers in general. But, there is not a high burn out rate.

I never knew that - this is an interesting thread. Is the drug abuse because of using drugs so often in practice, understanding how they work, etc? Please expand on this.

A lot of research has been done on addictions in general. From what I gather, drug addiction is a treatable disease; just like diabetes and CAD, except for modality.

I'm sure that working with and around potent narcotics just makes it easier for the disease to progress; similar to cheescake and cigarettes.
