DEM or CNM in Florida?

Hello All,

Haven't posted in a while because I was pretty sure what my route was going to be on my way to becoming a midwife but I've come across a road block and I need some spriritual guidance from you all.

Florida is a midwifery friendly state and I was going to start a DEM program in Aug 09. What I'm concerned about is not being able to make a living out of it. I didn't want to go the nursing route because of all the extra time and money. I'm 33 with 4 boys and I really didn't want to take all that time for school but I'm having second thoughts. I really don't want to work in a hospital as a midwife, but I don't want to kick myself when a few years have gone by and the laws have change and I won't be able to practice as a DEM. Now would be the time to make the right choice. What do you all think : nursing route or not??:confused:

Definitely nursing first - you then have the knowledge to back up your ambition.

I would recommend getting the nursing first, the only reason is as midwifes gain more and more acceptance and start catching more and more babies. OB/GYN are going to push & push for more qualifications as a way to close the market, and maintain the piece of the pie. Nurse organizations are going to be right behind you. I'm not saying Lay midwife organization won't be, but nursing organizations carry more weight, right or wrong. Just like the AMA carries more weight than nursing organizations. Fair or not, it might be the safer option.:)

Yes, I think your right and you've made some good points. I've decided to go the safer nursing route. May be a bit longer but I think it will be worth it in the long run. Thanks for all the advise.:rcgtku:
