CPM becoming a CNM

I am currently in an ADN nursing school, with the ultimate goal of becoming a CNM. I went to a 3 year direct entry midwifery school, and have had my CPM license since 2006, although my license is inactive because I have not been practicing since 2008 (family problems).

My plan is to get my ADN and hopefully get a job in L&D or something to do with women's health. Then I will continue on to get my master's and CNM license. I have heard that most NP work for a number of years as a nurse before they get my license- is this true for CNMs? I love nursing, but I really want to get this all done in the next 10 years, tops.

Most Master's programs require that you work as an RN for at least 1-2 years before entry into the program.

I would think having your CPM would help you get into a program, and you may even be able to challenge a few classes, thus cutting down your schooling time. You didn't mention when you will graduate from your ADN program, but you could immediately enroll in an RN-BSN program while working for a year or two as an RN, and then apply to a Master's program after that. The Master's work shouldn't take more than 3-4 years (although, at that time, you may have to go all the way through to a DNP, which would add another year or two).

yes, you can easily get it done in 10 years. lets say you're just starting your ADN program. (you didnt say when you'll graduate)-so, graduate in May 2012. then, you can work for a year or two in the women's health field of your choice, and then apply to RN-BSN programs (1 year) and then, MSN program (2 years). or alternatively, after you grad your ADN program, work for 1-2 years (or more) as a RN, then apply to an ADN-MSN program for nurse-midwifery, which is 3 full time years (thats what im doing) this is all assuming full time classes.

so thats only 6 years of school/work, assuming you are graduating ADN school in 2012. take your time, research schools, and decide if you'd rather do ADN-BSN, then MSN program, or ADN-MSN program.

good luck! i believe being a CPM can only help you, and will be great experience to put on your application to grad school that others wont have
