Okay, what is your experience with online ACLS renewal? I'm catching holy grief from my staff because I found out that many of their renewals are done online and I am not authorized to reimburse them. Our hospital provides and pays for in-house certification and recertification and pays them their regular hourly to attend. What gives?

My hospital did not allow them since there is no practice sessions

Hey:

Where I used to work, we did reimburse them if it was required for their jobs. I mean, what is the difference between the online and the live? As long as it is the American Heart Assn course (not those lame companies that say that they are AHA affililiated), then give them the 8 hours for renewal and 12 hours for initial, provided they give you a completion certificate. The only recognized course we use is the http://www.onlineaha.org site. (The official AHA site that requires a skill validation with an ACLS instructor). The course cost is 120.00. We used Healthstream, and ACLS is online there now as well. All of the other "ACLS" renewals online do not require skill validation and are not AHA courses.

i've been acls/pals certified for nearly twenty years and obviously, long before the internet, had to sit all weekend to renew every to two years. what a pain. a few years ago i decided to take an online course. i had my nurse manager look it over first. the course was pretty thorough but i was stuck on the stupid computer for hours trying to complete it. the entire thing had to be done sitting there. not much better than going to class (other than not having to shower and dress :) ) this year i tried a different site, www.cprtrainingfast.com and it was much better. i printed the prep materials, printed the test and worked on it between patients. the only thing i had to do on the computer was punch in my answers which only took me a couple minutes. i got my card that same day, too. the card looks like any other acls card and doesn't say anything about being "onliine." was a little worried my manager wouldnt accept the card but to my surprise, she had taken her renewal course with the same company! :)

i know your post is old, but that link you said you used is not an aha endorsed website, so it does not give you an aha acls card.

"will i receive an american heart association card by completing your online course?

no. although we follow the exact same guidelines and course content, you may only receive an aha card by physically attending an aha course. currently the aha does not offer any “online courses.” while the cognitive portions of their bcls and acls courses can be completed only, they will always require an in-person skills check to a certificate."
