Continuing my education is very important to me, not only for my esteem but it is my nature. It is one of the reasons that I love nursing, you are always learning new things. ( or at least, you should be.) MSN and FNP have been my goal. The autonomy has an appeal. However lately, I have been emerged back into hospital nursing, CCU/ED. Now, I am astounded that I ever left the hospital enviroment. I love it, I have missed it.. so, I am now re evaluating my plans. I am a single mom, hospital hours are easier and the prospect of a FNP program seem unsurmountable (sp?). I am investigating CCRN and have thought about taking an ACLS instructor course. So, any advice on what would make me more marketable as a nurse in these areas? Thanks in advance. :jester:

well, heres the thing,

I have put 20 years into hospital nursing, & 18 years into ICU. I have a bachelors. I hold my CCRN. I just want to be a bedside nurse. I just want to do the best I can for my patients. The only reason i might pursue more education, is to get the clout i need, to get people to listen to me when i am fighting for my patietns

I love being a staff nurse, I love the ER. That being said - at almost 48, I'm unsure I can keep this pace for another 20 years. For instance, yesterday I worked 12.5 hour w/o a break - went to the bathroom twice! I had also worked Sunday for 12.5 hours (again, no break) and then when I got ready to get off, there were six traumas! So...I had to stay another two hours. I was so tired when I got off, I had to drive with my window open.

Education gives you options if (heaven forbid) you become ill and can't do the job, you find that as you age, you don't want to do the job or you need or want other things in your life.

Education is never wasted. However, that said, I do know all about the raising the kid thing too - I did nursing as a second career in my early 30's when my kids were in school and that helped much. Maybe later for you guys??

Exactly. I suppose that the word marketable was a mistake on my part. So, I will clarify. I want to be the best that I can be, I want to excel.. so that I can provide the best care possible for my patients. I want to be an asset to my department and most of all be learned and qualified to provide excellent care. So as I said, I am considering taking the CCRN, also TNCC.

Too true, nursing is so diversified that there are hopefully many options.
