Returning To Nursing

Specialties Cardiac

I have just recently started to give serious consideration to returning to nursing.

I am a Registered Nurse who has spent the last 19 years being a full time mother and homemaker.

At this point, I think I am most interested in Cardiac Nursing.

Where do I start?

Should I work in a Cardiology office to begin with?

Also, Chest Pain Emergency is something that interests me.

Is that a sought after area?

Would appreciate any help.

Thanks.

Glad to read that you're interested in returning to the nursing field. :)

I know of at least a couple of larger teaching hospitals that offer refresher courses/preceptorship programs for nurses returning to their profession. If I recollect correctly, these refresher programs help the returning nurse "get up to speed" with the more basic aspects of nursing care. Once the returning nurse has finished this program, then heavy recruitment is done towards the returning nurse to take a job at their hospital! :chuckle

I would think that taking a refresher course would be a good first step to take. There are tons of cardiac care related jobs out there for the taking! I was just visiting the web site of a hospital near where I live and counted about 4 full-time night positions alone for one intensive cardiac care unit.

Hope this is helpful.

Hi There,

Phew, Buildingalife. I was so glad to read your message as I'm also a returning nurse after about 9 years away from nursing. Coincidentally I'm also looking at Cardiac Nursing and I'm hoping to begin in a Telemetry unit. There are refresher courses for returning nurses where I live but they can be expensive; however I'm hoping it will be worth it in the end. Good luck Buildingalife and keep in touch, let us know how it works out for you; and Efiebke is right. There are tons of Cardiology jobs out there.

Bizzylizzy.

I, too, am returning to nursing after 4 years with 7 years of ICU experience prior. It's scary, but exciting! I want to try the cath lab, but it will take time to get my nursing wings back on! I've enrolled in a refresher course at Old Dominion Univ. in Norfolk, VA. It's very good! Yes, expensive, but worth it. Any comments or info is much appreciated.
