Vcc Vs. Douglas College

I am interested in doing the BSCN. But i cant decide which school to attend. Vcc seems to be very known for their nursing, and there is quite a bit of pre-requesites which makes it harder to apply and time consuming to do. Douglas on the other hand, i hand not heard too much about their nursing program until i did some research and it does seem to be very good too, their pre- requisites seem easier than the ones at vcc, which makes it easier to apply for...

does it mean that because vcc is harder to get into, that its a better nursing school?

please let me know what your thoughts are.... any comment will be much appreciated.

Here's my opinion, which is just speculation.

Both colleges know that they will only accept about 20% of the applicants, due to lack of seats.

VCC requires you to take some core courses as Pre-reqs, like anatomy and whatnot, before applying. Why?

Because, then all 100% of applicants will spend 1/2 semester at VCC to do the pre-reqs, even though only 20% of them will be accepted into the program later.

Meaning VCC at least makes some money with the bunch of people who did the pre-reqs, but failed to get accepted.

Douglas on the other hand does those core courses, like anatomy, within the program.

I would rather pick Douglas.

But how can they only accept 20%? i thought that once you do the pre-requesites and the anatomy/physiology etc. you get to apply and put onto a waiting list?? it takes quite a bit of time, but it doesnt mean you get rejected, does it? they shouldnt be able to not accept ppl that have all the requirements.. that makes no sense....

At douglas you can be accepted either as a high school graduate or as someone who has university credits. I applied with my university transfer courses a & p, eng, psych, phil with no volunteer hours. I did not get accepted. Douglas gives you points on what you have accomplished. The higher amount of points the more likely you are to be accepted. You can be accepted into Douglas with or without anatomy and phys. but you will have to do those while you are in the program. You can also do them before you get accepted. If you do not get in you have to keep applying each year. They keep a waitlist but its only for the upcoming term. Do your courses in the program while doing nursing, dont get in, pay application fee over and over.

VCC you have to complete the 3 core courses plus 30 volunteer hours. If you apply and meet the requirements you will be waitlisted. You are accepted and don't have to keep applying to get in each year. You can do your courses anywhere you choose. All you have to do is fill out a form that takes 30 secs to transfer in your courses to vcc. Pay for your courses anywhere you choose, pay application fee once if you meet all the requirements, on waitlist.

All nursing grads in BC will have to write the same nursing exam.

douglas is a 4 year program with summer breaks etc.

VCC is 36 months straight with one week breaks between terms and one reading break in each term

vcc way more practical training v douglas

-very short lab time out of 2 hours per week we did 30 mins mostly.

-labs are not organized

-no sims during my time

-competitive environment where anything goes. very catty, bullying, exlusion

-not supportive. the school wants silence and will nail u

-high rate of failure. your suppose to have experience before entering

vcc

lots of lab time

-very organized

-collaborative learnng environment

-teachers are tough too

fast paced

high expectations
