I am starting a thread for UFV, Sept 2013 applicants (thus the title)

I am a Jan 2013 reject and hoping for a spot in the fall. Is anyone here a repeat applicant?

Congrats on getting in baileybee! Wow, so they made a mistake and instead of being on the waitlist you were accepted? Pretty crazy, but you must be excited!

Yep, my friend has pretty well decided that she'd like to accept her seat at UFV.

As far as immunizations/TB test goes, I emailed and told them I couldn't have the form in by the May 31st deadline, so they said as long as I handed it in by June 14th that would be fine. Not sure if that's the same date for other people too, but possibly?

I was supposed to be on the waiting list. They corrected that, and I was called in when a seat became available. I am more than relieved.

same issue here...r u done with vaccinations?

nope. lol. I have and appt on Monday morning at a travel clinic.

Hello everyone!

My name's Tony and I am a 6th semester nursing student at UFV and I wanted to say congratulations to all those who received their letter of acceptance into the BSN program this up-coming fall!!!! How thrilling and exciting!!! For those who unfortunately did not get their acceptance, I am so sorry to hear that :( BUT continue to apply, upgrade those courses, continue volunteering and maintain hope!!

I am also a leader of the Nursing Students Association (NSA) at UFV and I just wanted to make sure that you guys are aware of the New Student Nurse Orientation (NSNO) that will be happening on August 27th at 1800! An invitation letter should have been sent out along with your admission package... but who knows what could have happened! Well if you didn't know about the NSNO, you will most likely get a reminder e-mail from one of the secretaries!

But basically, the NSNO is an orientation event led by the NSA, geared towards you guys - new student nurses. It's quite an informative event as we will be discussing what your 3/4 years will look like, what to expect, tips and advice re how to survive being a nursing student, when you need your stethoscopes by... etc. etc. There will also be a free dinner!

If you did read all that - thank you! I'll be occasionally checking this board so feel free to ask any questions as I know you guys are probably all so excited to get started and be a student nurse! Look forward to meeting you guys!

Again, congratulations!

-T

Hi tonysn,

We received our letters and I will be attending the orientation. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone :). I have a question regarding finding a volunteer pregnant lady. What would our options be if we are unable to find someone on our own ? I'm trying to find someone, but I'm gettin to the point where my resources may be exhausted soon and haven't found anyone yet. Any advice ?

Thank you so much :)

Thanks for the info Tony! I'll be attending the orientation too!

To add on to the question above...do you know when we will receive more information about the mom-to-be project? I am following a good friend of mine who is due in October, so I was going to be going to an appointment with her next month, but not too sure what to do...do I journal these visits? Or just soak it all in??

Dragonflygrrl, my friend is going through the maternity clinic in Abbotsford. When I called UFV to give them all her information and doctors name, she mentioned quite a few people had found mothers through the maternity clinic. That may be a place to check out?

Hey Dragonflygrrl and Paraston,

Sorry for the late reply! I have been very busy lately!

I look forward to meeting you guys - it should be a great event!

As for the Mom-To-Be Program, hopefully I will be able to answer both of your questions:

1) You will definitely be getting a lot more information once you start school. Unfortunately, UFV is pretty bad at giving you guys information regarding where to go the first day, book lists, etc. prior to you getting started. You literally won't hear anything from them until the first day... HENCE why we created the orientation event to at least give you guys some more information.

2) I would not fret too too much if you cannot find an expecting mother. If you have found one, fantastic. Paraston has suggested a fabulous way of finding a mom. Many students in the past have found mothers via family clinics, maternity clinic (in Abbotsford), and/or any other family practices Chilliwack are also very supportive of this program as they have referred patients to it. Also, feel free to check out midwifery clinics as well. I think there is one in Chilliwack and in Abbotsford. So honestly, I know it will be weird going in to talk with doctors as asking for if there are any pregnant mothers around lol, but they are used to it! Also, once the program gets started, the coordinators of the program will be doing their best to help you find mothers. In our class, everyone had a mother to follow. For me, I had a difficult time, but last minute, the coordinator was able to find one that was open to a male student! IF for some reason that you CANNOT find a mother, there is an alternate assignment that you can do in lieu of it. However, that assignment is a huge package of questions and such so it would be much nicer to find a mother... I have the package (since I thought I was not going to have a mother), and trust me - you DO NOT want to do it...

2) Little tip - try to find someone who will be delivering close to where you live! Some students unfortunately missed the births since they were in Chilliwack/Abbotsford and their mothers were delivering in RCH or VGH. Mine called me at 0400, the day before an exam! Thank goodness she was delivering in Chilliwack!

3) The assignment associated with the program (which I do not think has changed since I did it) includes journal entries. I believe they are entries re 1 pre-natal visit, 1 for the labour and delivery (lady partslly or c-section), and 1 follow-up. There could be more... I can't quite remember! But this is much nicer to do than that alternative package that I was talking about! So Paraston, I would keep a journal entry of your doctor visit and the labour and delivery. So things to include would be what you observed in terms of the nursing role, what you thought about the experiences, what you have questions about, etc. Self-reflection is key throughout the entire program! But definitely soak in the experience for certain! I hope you enjoy the entire experience! It's quite a beautiful one for sure!

Hopefully I answered your question, but please let me know if I can explain something better or more. Man! I am getting excited just talking about this - haha it's almost like re-living the experience. I bet you guys are getting excited as well! Hopefully you are! UFV has a FABULOUS nursing program; very much comparable to the ever-glorified BCIT nursing program! And I am not saying that just because I am a UFV student nurse haha. The faculty, the program itself will surely prepare you and provide you with all the necessary resources to ignite that nurse in you (of course if you put the effort in!) Again, I know this does sound very biased, but I am trying to speak objectively!

Thank you so much for the great info! Really appreciate it ! Soooo excited to get started :)

Paraston thanks for the great suggestions to call the maternity clinics ! I have contacted both the one in Abbotsford and one in Maple Ridge, at least I was able to leave my info so you never know, maybe someone will be interested :) can't wait to meet everyone

Are classes held at the same location where our interviews took place/where we were required to submit our documents?

I'm not familiar with the Chilliwack area and will need to begin looking for a place to live, so any insight would be helpful :)

All the nursing classes are held at the campus we went to for our info night. I'm not sure if ENG 105 is as well.

I was unable to attend the info night due to extenuating circumstances, so I'm unaware if that differs from where the interviews were held.
