UBC Nursing - Sep. 2012

World Canada CA Programs

Hello Everyone!

I am considering applying to UBC Nursing for the September 2012 intake... but I'm not quite sure if I'm eligible to apply...

My primary concern is my post-secondary credits... everyone seems to have already completed a Bachelor's before applying? As of now, I have 40+ credits... by the end of June 2010 I'll have 50+ credits (which is the deadline for all transcripts), but they're a combination of first-year science, calculus and language courses with only a couple of second year o-chem... would that be ok?

I am currently a Langara student, but I have studied at SFU before until my relocation.

I've also read on the website that the average age of applicants were 21-47 (please don't quote me on this, I can't remember the exact range)... and I'm now 18 (will soon turn 19 though), but I have the requirements it's just that I'm unsure if it's alright that my 50+ credits are mostly first-year...

My GPA now is 3.3 and hoping to boost it up after this semester...

I volunteer regularly at a senior home and am a certified lifeguard and swimming instructor, worked part-time at Timmys until relocation and now have a part-time job at a local grocery store... I just hope age isn't that big of a deal because I know what I want and I'm working for it...

Should I apply at all...

(Very Worried. HELP Please!!!)

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

Hi everyone,

I have an interview on April 16th (this Monday already!) and I am wondering how others that got an interview are preparing for it. I have experience with nursing roles by both volunteering at a hospital and with personal experience, so I don't think I need to research this further, but I am planning on researching current ethical issues in medicine and practicing with sample MMI scenario's.

I am also wondering how those of you who are currently in the nursing program or have recently graduated prepared for the MMI's and if there is anything you would recommend to do before the interview.

If any of you have found helpful websites that could aid in preparation please share and I will do the same :)

To those who did not get an interview I wish you the best of luck!

Dear Air Canada Pilots,

Please do not make me miss my UBC interview on Monday morning.

Thank you so much in advance.

SB

Thank you pastaenthusiast and crow_flies so much for your advice. I also have other experiences, I've been heavy on volunteering so I'm hoping that will be fine. If I do find a club that I have time for and happen to like then I will definetly take it into considereation.

Thanks again and good luck with your applications :)

hi everyone!

i am a current ubc nursing student here to hopefully answer any questions you may have. i'm sorry i didn't look at this thread until now. good luck to everyone in their interviews this week! some of the people you meet this week will be your student colleagues, professors, tas and friends in just a few months!

i believe they interviewed 200 students last year for 120 spaces in the program. acceptance letters went out about 2 weeks after the interviews. my interview was april 13th, i got my an email about my wait listed spot on the 28th and my official acceptance on may 25th. i was number 4 on the wait list (they do tell you) and they send out acceptance letters as soon as people turn down their places. if you end up on the wait list don't give up hope, they do move through it. as a male you are on the same playing field as your female counterparts, i suppose if it came down to two equal applicants they would accept the male to try and balance the gender ratios.

i agree with what bc1234 said. it's important to remain supportive and kind with one another. throughout nursing (in school and in your career) you will rely on your colleagues for support, best to start out you nursing career with this in mind. in fact i think it's fare to say you won't be a very good nurse if you think you can go at it all on your own.

send any questions my way and i'll try and help you out. i will also make an effort to keep an eye on the thread over the next few weeks.

happy interviewing!

Thank you Erob! Any general tips for those of us who are going to be interviewing in the next couple of days?

Hey,

So I've gotten a few questions about the interview and though I can't give you any details about the questions I can give a few prep tips.

Try to familiarize yourself with the MMI interview process. That said, I remember reading somethings last year about MMI interviews in which you really have to role play (sometimes with hired actors), this is not the case for the UBC interviews. Your interviewers are profs and grad students, and they're really nice.

To prepare for the interview I would mostly say have a good idea why you want to become a nurse, what you think are important qualities for a nurse to have. If you have any personal experiences that back up those qualities try to work them into your interview answers. All of the questions are posed as scenarios, you are not supposed to demonstrate nursing knowledge but you should be able to show that you are a good critical thinker and are able to formulate well thought out answers. If you have a chance to familiarize yourself with the nursing code of ethics it might be helpful (I didn't do that, so don't stress if you don't have time).

Most importantly stay calm and try to enjoy yourself a little.

Good luck!

Hey everyone! Hope all is well with final exams! Almost there guys! Summer is right around the corner! :yeah:

I had my interview on the 16th and have to say it was a wonderful process, I really like the MMI system after being exposed to it for the first time.

For those who were wondering about the numbers, the woman who was directing my interview group said they had 438 applications this year, offered 192 interviews, and will take 120 from that 192.

All the best to everyone! Hopefully I get to be classmates with some of you!

Thank you, erob, for your response!

I had my interview yesterday and agree with empathetic gal- it ran smoothly and wasn't unreasonable in any way.

Apparently we should (theoretically) hear from them in 2-3 weeks.

Apparently we should (theoretically) hear from them in 2-3 weeks.

Which feels VERY long (but I know it's not).

How did you all feel about the interview?

We're done! Now we wait again...

Fingers crossed. :)

Are we all done with the interviews now?

Do you feel confident you will get in?

I thought it was a lot of fun. Definitely entertained me for 2 hours.
