Second-Entry Nursing Programs - 2014 Hopeful

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Hi Everyone!

I'm starting this topic for those who are applying to 2nd-entry programs, to start in 2014.

A bit about myself:

I'll be applying to University of Ottawa and University of Toronto.

Graduated with a Social Science degree from Ottawa U w/ 7.2 CGPA (aka 3.33 on 4.0 scale, or a B+)

A lot of community involvement in health promotion, youth counseling programs, women's health research..

Currently taking the prerequisites...

I'm kind of nervous about the applications because I know how competitive these programs are... Any advice from current 2-year BScN students would be great!

Let's get this thread going

I think Western started sending out their acceptances at the end of March. A few people have posted on here that they got in. I received a message from them on April 15 saying that my application is deferred as they are waiting for future grades. I was told that anyone who is in the process of completing a degree or has classes in progress will have the application deferred as they need final marks.

I was also told by the admissions coordinator at Western that their cutoff last year was 82.6. So if that's your first choice and you're worried about grades, you can kind of gage where you stand based on last year's cutoff, as Western looks only at grades for admission.

I got accepted to McMaster on April 16, then UofT on April 17 and I've accepted Mac. Good luck getting into your program of choice!

Thanks for the info! I also got that email from them. I know they had less spots last year too... I think 56. So maybe that will open up a couple extra... I have the grades I guess I am just losing confidence!

Congrats on your acceptances :) Do you know where you're going to go yet?

Hey,

I don't know much details about the two programs, but if I were in the same position as you, I'd probably choose UFT, just because I've heard a lot more about how good their program as opposed to York. Congrats on getting in! :)

I have been admitted to the York and UFT program. I'm having a hard time deciding between the two programs. I was just wondering if anyone could provide any insight about the programs / explain why they may have chosen one over the other.

I would really appreciate it!

and congrats to everyone that has got in!!

To those of us waiting to hear back from Western, I read on PreMed a little while ago that someone posted the following:

"For those who are waiting for their acceptances, I called admissions today and they told me that they're accepting 86.5% and above right now. Less than half of the 64 spots have been filled. She assured me that the average will drop considerably and, often, alot of the people who accepted early will give up their spots once they've been accepted elsewhere. She said that they're going to wait a while before sending out the next round of admissions (she didn't say the exact date but I got the impression that it will be close to may or in may) because they're waiting for more people to get their final marks in (like me). "

I've been waiting everyday, but I guess now we'll have to wait until at least next week for news. Stay strong!

Thanks for the info! I feel like we're all in the same boat.... my grades still haven't become official yet so until then, I can't send in my transcripts. It's good to know that less than half the spots are filled though. I wonder how many applicants they got. Does anyone know?

Hi there! I also got accepted to McMaster's accelerated nursing program and accepted my offer of admission! I tried to find that facebook group you mentioned but had no luck; nothing is coming up when I type in "McMaster Accelerated Nursing Class of 2016." Help with this would be much appreciated! I would love to connect with/ get to know some nursing students before we start school :)

Also, if anyone else is going to McMaster's accelerated nursing program in the fall I'd love to hear from you! Add me on facebook:facebook.com/shannessa.b

Anyone heard anything from Trent in the past two weeks?

They accepted me for an Honours Science, which I've already done an honours double degree (B.Sc.) so I don't get why. I haven't got my official grades to send in yet though so I'm thinking they'll send me another offer once I get those in.

I haven't even received an alternate offer yet :/ Would you mind sharing what your GPA is/when you received the offer? Hopefully, we hear some good news in the next two weeks cause apparently they're sending out more offers then :)

I received an Honours double degree in Biology & Psychology B.Sc. at Wilfrid Laurier. My GPA for my last 5.0 full credits (last 10 classes) is 3.5 (B+). My GPA for my last 10.0 full credits (last 2 years) is 3.1 (B). It's not the greatest but we'll see I guess. I have a very extensive background in biology and mental health, so I feel like that gives me an advantage. My prerequisite grades range from B- to A- across the board. Have you heard from anywhere else other than Trent?
