Opinion on Humber College RN program

Hmmm....I had to go check out what I bought. The philosophy & literature texts are based on my elective choices. I was out of school for 10 years before starting back this year. It's scary and quite a change in mindset but not as bad as I had made it out to be in my own head. You'll be fine, and don't worry about the readings. They aren't so bad in first semester and honestly, I didn't do much in the way of readings - it's just not how I learn and retain information. I wanted to get my books early and get started, but you won't even know what to read until classes start and without assigned readings, these are some VERY complex textbooks. Our fundamentals book is used all four years - and it's totally overwhelming right now just because of the volume of information it covers (most of which we haven't begun to touch on yet).

What I would do - brush up on essay & paper writing. Refine your research techniques. Familiarize yourself with APA formatting. Let the material come as the classes do. Maybe get the anatomy textbook and start flipping through or find some great review websites and start checking them out. Honestly, in first semester A&P was my hands down favourite class and our instructor was fantastic! What's nice is, he teaches both first and second semester, so there's continuity.

hi everybody! i am landed immigrant (3years) to Canada. i completed my SB4U, SCH4U & ENG4U from central tecnical school Bathurst and complete TOFEL this yr i got offer from HUMBER COLLEGE for BN program:banghead:. i ve solid science back groun and anatomy and path-physiology is my previous core subject:yes:. I AM EXTREMELY WORRIED ABOUT WRITING( ENGLISH) :arghh: ASSIGNMENT ESPECIALLY SCOLARLY PEERREVIEWED ARTICLE WITH APA FORMET BECAUSE ENGLISH IS MY SECONDARY LANGUAGE. In HUMBER anybody can give me idea about how tuff these assignments are:writing:? when i went to humber i got mixed reaction from previous students- some said bad:unsure: and some said good:yes:! I AM UNSURE WHAT I'LL DO BECAUSE OTHERS SAID IN RYERSON PEOPLE LIKE ME ARE NOT WELLCOMED AND FAIL IN ANOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY AND ASSIGNMENTS ( i got offer from ryerson too). my only concern is ENGLISH ARTS BASED WRITING. CAN SOME ONE HELP.

It is true that it may be a bit more of a challenge if you have english as a second language, but Humber has a writing centre that can help with editing papers and assist with any challenges you have with writing.

I will be attending Humber in September for the 4-year program. Has anyone else had a bad experience already? I have found all of the admissions, financial aid, and enrolment advisers to range from unhelpful to completely rude. I am the kind of person who goes by the motto that you catch more flies with honey than vinegar so it isnt a result of me being rude the the staff. I really hope this is not a sign of things to come with the professors. I am a mature student with a university background and am usually at the top of the class and well liked by professors. Fingers crossed that this rocky start is just a fluke!

I'm sorry you've had such a bad time of it already. I'm getting ready to start second year at Humber and I've had a pretty good experience overall. To be perfectly fair however, I wasn't a fan of the admissions office and I haven't had to deal with financial aid yet. I can see how it would feel like a bad omen and I wish I could say it will get better, but I know there are some people in my class who had trouble with administration. I just haven't been one of them I have found in general that being a mature student has been an advantage, we tend (generalization here) to be able to work with a wide variety of people, both staff and students.

I, like Galipemi, am going into my 2nd year. I've had a pretty good experience overall. The one thing I found during the year is that *sometimes* when I've e-mailed faculty, I get a really delayed reply, or not a reply at all.

Thanks for your reply! I figured it might have just been administration as they deal with a lot of students for all of the different college programs. I am glad to hear you have had a good experience so far. I am trying to put the few bad experiences behind me and hope for the best with the actual nursing faculty.

Few questions for you.

#1 Did you find that in general your classes were in the same area of the campus or were you running back and forth through the many buildings.

#2 What color scrubs are the nursing uniforms? Or can you buy any color you like and just attach the school crest to it?

#3 What option did you do for your cpr and first aid requirements? I contacted the first aid course coordinator and she said that HLT 203 is what the recommend for the BN students, but as far as i can tell on the website it is just a cpr certificate and not one with first aid.

1 - classes can be anywhere within the school, and for some reason, mine always seemed to be 3 floors apart Overall there's enough time to get where you need to go, the school looks massive but once you get to know your way around, it's actually not so bad.

2 - Scrubs used to be different, as of last year, all students must purchase the school's uniform scrubs. You do it at the bookstore part way through first semester and pick them up around exam time. They're navy blue with a light blue trim at the collar. Not bad, wouldn't be my first choice of fabrics. Oh - and don't buy any of the extras you hear talked about on this site - the school provides a kit with everything you'll need for the four years. It will have a Littman stet, BP cuff and all the materials you'll need for the clinical labs.

3 - I did my CPR through the school last year and I'm doing it with Red Cross this year. You don't actually need the First Aid portion - they only require it for the practical nursing students.

One more question.... what other supplies are included in the kit? I already have a littman stethoscope and a bp cuff, and pen light...

I haven't really gone through the kit in full. Inside there was the stethoscope, BP cuff and individual packets for each year. Mostly looks like general supplies to practice things like wound care, iv starts etc....

In all honesty, I wouldn't worry about buying anything "nursey" until you're well into the program. I mean, I'm sort of glad I already had my Littman since it's a different colour, so it stands out. But other than that, I haven't needed anything else.

YES!!!! I can't wait to get started. The sitting around waiting is almost worse than being freaked out about the unknown. I am waiting to hear back on my transfer credits right now to see how many of the "fluff" courses i can get out of. I am hoping that i can take the second year stats course in my second semester as that is really the only one that scares me. The rest of the courses i am looking forward to.

How much was the supply kit out of curiosity? I was also wondering if your year is using the 4th edition or the 5th edition of the nursing fundamentals book? From the description they dont seem like they are very different, so i am thinking that i might be able to get away with the last edition. I have found in the past in university that there is usually only a couple pages changed between the editions so they can call it "new" and make students pay for a new book.

Yup - waiting is the absolutely, hands down worst part of the whole process. I'm dying waiting for timetable options to be posted and I know that it won't be for weeks

As for the lab kit, it's included in your fees. The uniform scrubs were $40 I think for the set? Don't quote me on it but that sounds about right. The fundamentals we use is the revised fourth edition. First year psych was boring as heck and so were the two nursing courses. Second semester gets more interesting.
