A big thank you vintageandrea and starfish (and everyone that's contributed here)! I saw you at the orientation, Andrea, but didn't have a chance to say hi: I recognize you and will definitely say 'hi' when I do see you in the future Thank you so much for giving us your time to be there too!

Paramed appointments are scare now (was just able to register after the 72hr wait due to my late registration), and I had to cancel my CPR with Mohawk on the 19th (even though they said the 2 week pre-placement deadline was a scare tactic) due to the fact that the last available appointment was on the 15th! I found Red Cross the cheapest, though their booking website looked very 1990s and a little hokey.

    Andrea, I need you!!!

I just have some questions that I didn't really want to ask in front of the entire class...because I feel like an idiot. I'll just chalk it up to me not being a student for the last 14 years!

Can you buy the textbooks separate, or do you have to buy the bundle? And if we can buy them separate, how does that work with the online codes needed.

What's up, sweetcurves? Yes, you can buy the books separately in hard.copy..but you will need to buy nursing skills online which is about $75..whereas it comes with the e bundle.

I went to the bookstore today to buy the textbooks separate rather than the ebooks and was told they have sold out and they ordered new stock which won't be in for a while. So I caved and bought the ebooks. Oh well! Plus I saved a lot doing so!

    Andrea,

Do we have the same placement person the entire course? Or different every semester?

I have ****** this semester and I do like her, but I think it would be interesting to have all of them over the 4 semesters.

No, you have a different instructor every semester ****** is....well, she's old school and hardcore, that's for sure. But that can be good in some ways.

How has your first week been?

Honestly, I am really struggling. I have some health conditions that I thought were under control but everything has flared up and I've missed a lot already. I am determined to stay in the course though, and am just trying to work around my health issues.

The amount of homework/pre-class work is ridiculous. It's unbelievable to me how much we are required to do at home and how little we actually DO in class. This way of learning is totally unfamiliar to me and it makes me wonder what I'm paying for when I'm seemingly teaching myself a lot of it.

Hi sweetcurves, its come as a bit of a shock to me as well. I thought the course wouldn't be so bad as in class time works out to be only 3 1/2 days a week. I've found that with all the reading that is stated it can become overwhelming, I'm not sure who you have for teachers some build on the work covered in pre-class exercises others while others seem to use it as a method to squeeze more into limited time.

I would recommend talking to the teachers if you are finding yourself having issues they have been very approachable when i've talked with them. If possible stay ahead of the work load between week 1 and 2 I didn't and felt like i was drowning, this week however i had all the preclass done by the end of the weekend and i've felt so much better. Someone suggested focusing reading on just "ends in views" and not whole chapters, this might help with some of the textbook reading, of course doesn't help when they drop 42 page pdfs in the course materials. Hope this helps.

What I'm wondering, is with the pre class stuff, since we don't actually hand it in, can't I just do the reading portion and not worry about answering the questions? I'm finding myself just skimming the material looking for the answers, and not really READING the material. I'd rather read the material and make my own notes. I gain a better grasp if I can sit read the material entirely. But I don't have time to read it all AND type out all the answers to all these questions that no one is going to CHECK anyways!!!

oh, it gets worse! in my lab class this semester...my teacher said mohawk told them they are only allowed 30mins of actual lecture time per class and the rest has to be interactive group work. she actually timed it and when the timer went off she was like "ok im not allowed to talk anymore"...it's really lame. and they move so fast...i am learning medications now and they only take one class to cover it and then we move on.

sweetcurves...i replied to your message but i dont think it sent. yes first semester is very overwhemling, but you get the hang of it. no homework is handed in...it is for your own learning purposes. The questions are guidelines of what they want you to know...but if you have a more effective way of learning for you...then go for it. I didnt do all the homework for health and healing or professional development because i felt it was common sense and understood the concept. for bio and lab, i always did all the homework...which i recommend. i never did much reading though...just reading to answer to questions...but i dont learn by reading.

good luck, and let me know if you need any more help!
