CRNE Prep Group in Toronto or Ottawa - October 2011

World Canada CRNE

Published

Hey everyone, I was wondering if there are any people who want to start a CRNE (Canadian Registered Nurses Exam) Prep group or study group, whatever you may call it.

I just graduated and am scheduled to write in October. The reason why I wrote Toronto or Ottawa, is that I presently work and live in Toronto, having just graduated from Ryerson. I make it back home to Ottawa on the weekends, so am planning on hardcore studying in both cities!!!!!!

If we make a group, we can compile CRNE questions and go over material together. Any ideas would be very helpful. I heard the test is really hard now, and I personally know some people who have failed. Let me know, we can start as soon as July!

Does anyone know how much pharmacology will be on the CRNE?

I'm from the US so a little worried about different meds being used. A lot of the major meds are the same, but just concerned I don't recognize all the meds I'm seeing in Mosby's.

Also, will both the brand and generic names be given?

One of the questions in Mosby's was based on whether you could recognize that the brand and generic names on a prescription order don't match. Just wondering if we'll see anything like that on the exam ...

Found some sample questions:

Mrs. Smith, 30yo, has undergone caesarian section because of cephalo-pelvic disproportion. She is experiencing severe pain after the procedure and does not want to hold her baby. What should the nurse do?

a. Explain to the patient the importance of bonding with her newborn.

b. Inform the patient that pain is to be expected and give her a warm blanket.

c. Administer analgesia and reassess patients comfort level.

d. Advise the patient that holding the baby will distract her form her pain.

I think c. You would want to provide pain relief and assess.

I think c too. The pain needs to be treated before maternal-child bonding can be promoted.

Yes. When the answer contains assess....often that is the correct one. Think nursing process: assess, diagnose, plan, implement, evaluate.

Which of these clients would the nurse put first on the list to be discharged in order to make a room available for a new admission:

a. A middle aged client with a history of being ventilator dependent for over 7 years and admitted with bacterial pneumonia five days ago.

b. A young adult with DM type2 for over 10 years and admitted with antibiotic induced diarrhea 24 hrs ago.

c. An elderly client with history of hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and lupus and was admitted with Steven-Johnson syndrome that morning.

d. An adolescent with a positive HIV test and admitted for acute cellulitis of the lower leg 48 hrs ago.

D. Is the least life threatening /unstable of the other cases.

Of all the options, I pick D. The middle aged client and the elderly client you would not want to discharge. The person with diarrhea will have electrolyte imbalances and risks dehydration. The other....I forget that one now.

My answer is A. I was thinking that this client has been admitted 5 days ago and receiving antibiotics.

Could be. In real life, bacterial pneumonia in a middle aged person may require longer than 5 days. Someone with acute cellulitis after 48 hrs can get home care. What's the answer?

Thinking about a lowered immune system and cellulitis needs prolonged hospitalization.
