Student working at a camp

Specialties Camp

Have any of you been a student working at a camp, or supervised a student working at your camp?

There is a very good chance that I'll be working at a camp this summer as a nurse assistant. The job description, from what the director said is pretty much being a mommy, first aid, checking for sore throats, and dispensing meds per MD orders. She said that you get a full day (24 hours) off per week along with 2-3 nights off per week, when not on duty, or if it's slow, the camp and it's facilities are available for use, the pay is great, and it comes at the end of the summer.

I did a little mini interview today, and was told to email my references, then come up with some questions and call back in a couple of days so we may be able to "tie things up."

What types of questions should I be asking? I already know that I would be working with one other nurse, there are about 180 campers there for the entire summer, room and board is provided, free time is as I stated above, pay is as I stated above, the schedule is mostly worked out between the two nurses, there is an MD there the entire summer, the population is predominately Jewish, but it's not a Jewish camp, and it's no problem that I'm not Jewish -- there are campers and other staff who aren't etc.

What else should I know before I go ahead and make the decision?

Here are the questions I've thought of:

- What is the housing like? (Toilet, shower, electricity etc)

- How is laundry done (facilities there, service etc)?

- Is there phone/internet access?

- What does the training entail?

- How much independence would there be as a NA?

- Is there a uniform?

- Is first aid training/certification needed?

- Favorite part of camp?

Are these good? Anything else I should ask? I'm planning on calling tomorrow.

Thanks!

-Where will you be sleeping (ie in your own cabin, sharing a room, in the infirmary, etc)?

-Who's "on" at nights? At my camp the students slept in the infirmary and in the event of an emergency, we had a doorbell that rang in our room. It makes sense for the campers, but it was kind of stressful for me because I'd go to bed worrying about emergencies that could happen.

-You may want to ask about food, but that's up to you. I'm pretty much a vegetarian, so it was important to me that they had options at meals so I wouldn't be stuck if they're eating chicken nuggets every night.

-Along with the uniform, ask if there's anything you need to bring anything, like your own stethoscope

Thanks for the response...

I actually ended up calling, and asking most of what I posted with some additional things, was offered the job, and took it :)

I hope you have a great summer. I am going back to "my" camp for a 3rd year. First year was great, second was very stressful but I love the camp and adore my campers so I simply couldn't say no to a 3rd year.

Congratulations on your job! Hope you have a lot of fun this summer!

Thanks guys!
