San Diego State University Fall 2014 hopefuls

U.S.A. California

Hello!

I'm starting a thread for those who have applied to SDSU's BSN program for Fall 2014. I know we still have some time to find out if we are accepted or not, but I thought it would be nice to start this thread so that we can all have some support while we are all stressing about whether we got in or not. Also, I am interested in how competitive my scores/ grades are under the new point criteria. Here are my stats:

Cumulative GPA: 3.89

prerequisite GPA: 3.73

TEAS: 89.3

5 points for work experience (I work as a CNA in a home health care agency, I think it should count, right?)

61 points total (so worried this score isn't very competitive)

military veteran also (not worth points but hopefully it is put into consideration?)

please post your stats too!! Also, for chemistry I took both general chemistry and organic chemistry, do I include both when determining my prereq. GPA or just the organic chemistry?

@Barbiegirl15 Thank for the response. Mine still says pending hopefully it's still under review since I haven't received an acceptance/rejection letter?

I am in as well! So excited! Now decision time. Does anyone know which school is better? Sdsu or csulb?

@beccaz07 I've only had friends graduate from CSULB and they loved the trimester program there, not to mention distance was a lot closer. They all got hired by Long Beach Memorial full time right after graduation, which is where they did their clinicals.

I've been trying to answer that question for a while now. Long Beach has a very high NCLEX pass rate; it was about 96% last year. San Diego's pass rate was about 88% last year. Long Beach makes their pool stats available to everyone, but I've never been able to find San Diego's. According to the CSULB Nursing website, these were the stats for the student admitted for Fall 2014:

Fall 2014

* * *

604 Generic applicants (70 admitted, 171 ineligible, 433 qualified alternates)

Rating Average - 9.39 (range 9.92- 9.35)

Statistics for 70 selected students:

Average Science GPA - 3.90 (range 3.25- 4.0)

Average GE GPA - 3.94 (range 3.53 - 4.0)

Average TEAS test score - 89.85% (range 80.7.0% - 97.30%)

Average Math score - 93.73% (range 83.30% - 100%)

Those are some pretty impressive stats! As for the programs themselves, I think they are both good and that we really couldn't go wrong either way. At this point, it really is about what it is that you're looking for.

Long Beach: it has the two-year choice (but that means no summer vacations!), a lot of students get hired at LBMMC right after graduation (the contract is for two years and there is some tuition repayment), the NCLEX pass rate is high, there is a built-in preceptorship in the last semester, so a lot of good things! I am little concerned about how students are divided into basic and trimester... I think that you request the program that you want, but there is a chance that you won't be placed in it.

San Diego: the program is five semesters, there is no built-in preceptorship but (from what SuperMurse and Coriander have said) there are opportunities in the last couple semesters, all nursing student are required to fulfill a study abroad program (it can be over spring break, there are lots of options, but it is an additional fee, check it out: Guidelines for Nursing Students), there seem to be a good amount of new grad residency programs at hospitals in the surrounding area -Sharp, UC San Diego, and Scripps all have them.

That is the information that I have collected in the past few weeks. I'd love for anyone with more information to add!

I got the email from the nursing program this morning and was accepted! I am so excited! Yayyyy!

Congrats! I was also accepted to SDSU's SON! Did you send the confirmation e-mail?

Those of you who got accepted to the nursing school- what was your gpa, prereq gpa, teas score? And did you have any work experience?

Surprised I got in with my Cumulative GPA being so low. Everyone on this page has a really high GPA!

Hi there!

Both of my GPAs were 4.0, my TEAS score was 91%, and I do not have any work experience. I am, however, a veteran. Hope that helps! :)

Yes, I sent it immediately! I also am registering for a BLS for healthcare providers class. I know there will be several things to get done, so I am knocking things out early. :)

I sent it yesterday and did my intent to enroll and housing agreement this morning. I'm also taking a CPR class the end of May. I can't wait to meet you all!
