Sac City College new selection criteria

U.S.A. California

Hello,

I was just looking at the Sacramento City College nursing website and noticed that they now have new application criteria. I am wondering if you have the 67 points needed to get into the random selection, is there more of an advantage to have higher points beyond just getting into the pool or is it all equal once you are qualified? I am going to try to get to the July info session, thought I would see if anyone had info. Thank you in advance!

From my understanding, once you make it into the qualified selection pool, all students have an equal chance of being selected because it is still random.

I hate to say it, but it seems that the chances to get in are going to be a WHOLE lot better now, just because a lot of people may not have anticipated that GPA would play such a big role in getting in so maybe the pool will be a lot smaller. I think that I just barely qualify so that is great if beyond the 67 it doesn't matter! Thank you for the info. To figure the GPA I was reading on the site that they are using the straight grade (B if you have a B-), is that your understanding?

At SCC, no plusses or minuses are given so they only use the straight grade (A, B, C, D).

I agree, the qualified applicant pool might be smaller due to the high points for GPA. We will see how it plays out next application cycle. Good luck to you.

SCC is now going by a point system as well? Can someone explain this to me please? I have applied 6 times so far with no luck. Thanks.

Take a look at SCC's nursing website. They spell everything out very clearly. They allow points based on number of times applied.

Hi Bristowa, I'm going into my second semester at SCC and from what the teachers told us once you make it into the pool it's 100% random. Nothing helps or hurts after that. :D

The new selection criteria will only make the qualified pool smaller for only a very short time. The pool will become larger once the applicants complete the TEAS V and find that if they're just a couple points away, they might find that they might make the "cut" into the pool if they've had some other relevant medical training that they didn't have before or they'll find a way to engineer some additional points in their favor.

Bottom line is: if you have decent grades and a decent TEAS V score, you'll get into the applicant pool without having to add in any "extra points" to meet the score of 67... The first semester or two they have this in place there'll be fewer applicants and there'll be fewer applicants based on a perception of it being more difficult to qualify than other regional schools other than Sac State. This is only a short-term bump in some applicant's chances of becoming qualifed.

Remember, every semester there have been about 1,000 qualified applicants vying for just about 25-35 slots.

Thank you for your replies, I attended the July info session and the director of nursing was mentioning that she thought the pool would be down to about 800 with the new process. Some students brought up the difficulty of reaching 67 points even with good grades, and we went over an example of an "average" student. Needless to say, it is pretty hard to get to 67. Apparently the extended program through Sutter will be starting this spring so there are I believe 55 positions there and 32 at SCC. This will help odds! Thanks again for the responses!

The point system is definitely going to narrow the pool of qualified applicants. Even though I scored higher than the "passing" they require for the program it still wasn't enough to earn me the points I needed. They will only take your first passing score...there is not turning back once you get a passing score so you better make sure its a high number. I wrote the school and dean about retaking my test and they will not allow it. This does not make sense to me since if you FAIL the teas then you can retake it in a year. Anyway, they suggested I repeat my class outside of the district in order to try to get enough points to even qualify to be in the pool. Just a heads up for others.

Sorry to hear about your TEAS test, it was pretty hard! Do you need to retake one of the prereq classes? There is a lot of work involved just to get the requirements done to try to qualify for the pool, and then we have to repeat all of the paperwork each time we apply if not chosen (I think?). Hopefully everything works out for you!

Bristowa

Yes, I plan on repeating one of my courses to get a better grade. No, actually the application has gone online so it's much easier and faster to submit the application. Thanks for the well wishes :)
