RN job offer with the VA's

U.S.A. California

Published

Hi, I have been offered a position with the VA's system, in a hospital, 12 hr shifts, which I like. Any pros and cons with the VA's? Why is the probation period 2 years? Usually, in a hospital, it's 3 months. No CNAs, just RN and LVNs. Is there such thing as "seniority"? What are the "good benefits" everyone talks about? What if you don't make it through the 2 year probation period? Anything else I should know before making a final decision on this offer? Thank you, I am new here :)

Be wary that they are not required to follow California's ratio laws because they are federal facilities. I had an offer but turned it down because the particular facility gave me a bad vibe.

Thank you for answering, NickiLaughs, BSN. I was afraid of that, but I know they also have a union. How is that possible, then? What is really good about the VA's? I work in a hospital with good pay, so I don't know if the VA's RN job position in their hospital is worth switching...Plus, the VAs told me the probation for an experienced RN is 2 years....
