Prospective or current ADN Students

U.S.A. California

After reading about the great difficulty in CA for new RNs finding employment, what do people in ADN programs plan for after graduation? Will you try to look for work? Move to other areas of the country with better opportunity for new grads? Or immediately pursue the BSN (or MSN)?

From reading about new CA grad experience, it is very challenging for new BSN grads to find work, so it the outlook for ADNs seems abysmal. I have been considering pursuing an RN at my local CC mainly due to cost, but the job prospects for ADN grads don't seem too promising in CA.

I will be starting my ADN program in the fall. I plan to apply for the CSU collaborative track program my school has with CSULA. With the collaborative track, ADN students take CSU classes during their summer breaks. At the end of the ADN program, they only have a year of CSU classes to complete and will graduate with a BSN in 3 years (ADN + 1 year at CSU). I already have my BA in English, so it might even be less time; I plan to meet with a counselor about this.

After my ADN program, I do plan to look for work but I will focus mainly on the year of BSN course work.

I chose a CC program because of costs and the fact that I didn't want to take out any more student loans.

Specializes in TCU, Post-surgical, Infection Prevention.

I am also starting my ADN program a local community college, then transferring back to my present university for their BSN program, also a public university.

I plan to look for work, because my longterm goals require me to have some experience - I am looking into smaller facilities and outside of the immediate LA area for jobs as well as non-traditional opportunities.

I plan to get as much schooling done, here in CA because it's cheaper here, imo.

I agree! California still has the cheapest school, despite the hike to $46/credit at community colleges! You can't beat it, really...
