Hey everyone,

I'm going to be moving to Ventura county in a couple weeks. I have applied to St. John's in Oxnard, Cottage in Santa Barbara, Community Memorial in Ojai and Ventura, and Los Robles in Thousand Oaks. The only one to contact me so far is Los Robles and it's the only med-surg position I applied for. Anyways, is anyone from this area and has anyone worked at Los Robles?? If so, did you enjoy it? I'm a little concerned about the commute from Ventura to Los Robles does anyone know about if the traffic?

Thanks,

Amber:)

Hi Amber!

Welcome soon to Ventura County. I live in Thousand Oaks, very near Los Robles Hospital. When I was in LVN school, we did our clinicals there, and I know that some other schools have RN clinicals there, as well. From what I hear, it's not a bad place to work. Your commute from Ventura shouldn't be too bad, either.

Let me know if I can be of any help to you :)

Hi, there. I was born and raised in Ventura County.

Although I've never worked there, the patient population at Los Robles is probably going to be educated, professional, and upper-middle class to wealthy (basically mirroring the demographic of Thousand Oaks).

If you live in Ventura and intend to commute to Thousand Oaks, you are going to have to drive across the Conejo Grade on a daily basis. The grade is a steep stretch of the 101 freeway that ascends from Camarillo into Thousand Oaks.

I used to live in Camarillo and "commute" to Ventura to Community Memorial Hospital (I worked tele there). I worked nights, so I had to sit in traffic on the my way home in the morning. I only had to go as far as Camarillo and it usually took me about 30 minutes. I had my son at Los Robles, so that's the extent of my experience with that hospital - overall it was good. I worked in a Medical practice that's next to Los Robles, so I definitely concur with the previous poster's description of clientele you can expect in Thousand Oaks. Overall, Ventura County is a great place, and while I love San Diego, I do miss Camarillo. Good luck!!

Thanks so much for your replies they help me a lot. I just set up an interview with Los Robles today and while I'm excited to get an interview, med-surg is something I'm not really passionate about. She said it's mostly medical and my last job was mostly surgical. I love the surgical patients and I don't really care for the medical side. I just don't know if it will be worth it to commute there and do something I'm not really into. I only applied for med-surg because I wasn't hearing anything back from people and I guess I was getting desperate. What would you do?

I would take the job.

You have two choices: you can accept a job in a specialty where you're not really passionate, or you can run the risk of being jobless for an extended period of time. The nursing job market in southern California is terrible right now. This might be your most promising offer, if not the only one on the table right now.
